Viola “Vi” Mae Cook (nee Babcock) age 92 of Wayne went peacefully home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

In 1920 a stamp was 2 cents, eggs were 39 cents per dozen, gasoline was 30 cents per gallon, a car was $345.00, steak was 36 cents per pound, bread was 11 cents per loaf, milk was 58 cents per gallon, a house could be bought for just over $6,000.00, and the average income was $1,130.00 per year. Most mass communication was done by radio as the television wasn’t invented yet, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich became popular, women got the right to vote, and a 10 lb baby named Viola Babcock was born at home on the kitchen table on North 8th Street in Hawthorne.

She graduated from Hawthorne High School with the Class of 1938. She was a bank teller for Citizens Bank in Paterson before being married on November 17, 1945 to David P. Cook. Vi and Dave met on a double date, each dating someone else. Shortly, after Dave asked his friend if he would mind if he called Vi to ask her out. The rest is history! They had a long engagement because Dave had to serve in World War II. Vi wrote letters nightly. When he returned, they got married at Bethany Church in Paterson. They honeymooned at The Breakers Hotel in Miami, Florida. Upon their return they lived first in Elizabeth, then Clifton, and purchased their first home in Wayne in 1951.

Vi was dedicated to her Christian faith and was a member of Bethany Church in Paterson, a founding member of Calvary Temple in Wayne, a member of the Pentecostal Lighthouse Church in Paterson and was currently an honorary member of the Bethany Church in Wanaque. She led the Missionettes & Prims ministries and taught Sunday School for many years. Her husband David was also very active within the churches serving as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, Worship Leader, and Vi was there by his side helping in any way she could. Vi was humbled by the fact that she and David were entrusted with the care of children in at least thirty-five people’s wills.

She was a dedicated wife and mother who, just like her parents, never drove a vehicle. David, who had the patience of a saint, would drive her everywhere and when he was not available she relied on other family members or the bus. Vi and David truly worked together as one for fifty-two years until his passing on October 30, 1998. Faith and family were priorities in their lives. They were the best cheerleaders/supporters of any activity, concert, or sport that their daughter or grandsons participated in. They did all in their power to be present at all these events. Vi and Dave enjoyed vacationing in Wildwood during the summer and Myrtle Beach in the fall.

Vi is the loving mother of Beverly Sullivan of Wayne; devoted grandmother of Steven and Glenn Sullivan of Wayne; dear sister of Isabella Drenth of Midland Park, and the late Hubert Babcock (1989); dear “adopted” great-grandmother of Anthony and Allison Paterno of Parsippany; she was also cherished by nieces and nephews. Vi’s life was made more comfortable, in her latter years, by her devoted aides Stephanie and Sheema McCrae, Delseeta Thompson, and Betty Lawson.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations to Bethany Church (Wanaque Campus), 568 Wellington Drive, Wyckoff, NJ 07481 would be appreciated.
