Wayne A. Gilchrist age 59 of Wayne died suddenly and unexpectedly on Friday, September 22, 2006 at the Saint Joseph’s Wayne Hospital in Wayne. At his passing he was receiving the loving care of his family gathered at his bedside.
He was born in Minneola, Long Island, NY and had lived in New Hyde Park, New York and Wanaque, NJ before moving to Wayne twenty-seven years ago.
Wayne received his formal education at Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, NY graduating with the Class of 1965. He then went to Pratt Institute in New York and studied Architecture.
Mr. Gilchrist was a self employed Remodeling Contractor trading as Gilchrist Remodeling and Carpentry in Wayne. He previously was a police officer in New York City and in Wanaque and just before going into his own business was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for TeleDynamics Company in Newfoundland.
He served in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander Attack Pilot during the Vietnam War in the VP 66 Air Squadron flying a P2V-7 Neptune and had the radio call name of “Cobra”.
Wayne was a member of the National Association of Remodelers, the Riverdale Police Pistol Club and as a model airplane enthusiast he belonged to the Garden State Circle Burners Club.
Wayne and Diane Gilchrist were married for thirty-one years in a “Best Friend Loving Marriage” together.
His children are left with fond memories of a father that was always there for them through life’s challenges and especially their sports events. He was gifted with a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor that he shared with warmth.
A message and heartfelt thoughts from a loving wife and children:
From Kristen: I admired him more than he will ever know. The love I have for him cannot be put into words. I loved helping him with our home improvements and learned so much from him. He's taught me what it is to be a person of strength. He was and always will be my hero. I've lost my father- but I know I'll always have an angel on my side.
From Kimberly: My dad was an amazing person. The memories that I have of him are so special, especially the most recent ones of him with my children. Within minutes of their births, he was there holding them in his arms and he never let go. Both children adored their "Boompa" and loved to spend time with him. All of our lives are better for having had him with us. He will always be with us in our hearts.
From Kevin: I could never put the way I feel about you into words. You always had a better way with words than I do. Guess that's why you were a "suit." You were my role model thoughout life. You were always there no matter what the inconvenience was. You were there to guide me, to show me everything that I needed to know. You never took no for an answer when it came to helping me with anything. I never had to ask... You were just there. I don't know what I am going to do without you. You once said that I was filling your shoes, but I know that I never could. There is nobody better than you Dad. I miss you. You were my father, but more my friend. I love you Dad.
From his wife: You were my partner for more than half my life. We had so many special times together from the birth of our children to the birth of our grandchildren. You've taken a piece of my heart with you that can never be replaced.
Surviving are his loving wife Diane (nee Horant) Gilchrist; loving father of Kimberly Gilchrist-Amerkanian and her husband Darren of Wayne, Kevin Gilchrist and his wife Reina of Springfield and Kristen Gilchrist of Wayne and her fiancé Tony Czapka; grandchildren Ryan and Kaylyn Amerkanian, Nicolas Gilchrist and soon to arrive Kyle Ryan Gilchrist; also survived by his in laws Edward and Veronica Horant.
