Friends may visit with the family at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne, on Sunday, December 10, 2017 from 2-6 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM on Monday, from the funeral home, then to St. Mary’s RC Church in Pompton Lakes, where at 11AM a Funeral Mass will be offered. Entombment will follow at the Maryrest Mausoleum in Mahwah.
William Gordon, 75 of Pompton Lakes, died on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. He had been a butcher and Meat Manager at ShopRite in Lyndhurst, West Milford, Hasbrouck Heights, Emerson and Wayne, enjoying a career of fifty six years with Inserra Supermarkets. He retired from his position of meat manager twelve years ago but then kept working for them in CGO.
Bill was born and raised in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. He and his brother Larry had loads of fun as kids, including swimming in Sunset Park, roller skating, and throwing various things off of the roof of the five-story building they lived in. On one silly occasion, the last day of school before summer recess, they spent an afternoon tearing pages out of their school books, folding them into airplanes, and then proceeded to throw dozens of them out the window. As a young boy, Bill was resourceful and learned to buy newspapers at the corner store for 10 cents, then sell them to the blurry-eyed patrons at the corner tavern for $1. As a teenager, Bill became an apprentice at the local meat market in Brooklyn where he learned his trade. His family moved to Wayne when he was just fifteen years old and he took a job at Great Eastern Mills.
Those skills he develop as a teenager would serve him well. He enjoyed a career of fifty six years as a butcher, Meat Manager, and recently retired as CGO for Inserra Supermarkets. Bill worked many of those years at the ShopRite in Wayne. Customers certainly knew him as a very personable guy, always smiling and laughing. Bill didn’t have mean bone in his body and loved having fun. “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night was his favorite song, which says a lot about who he was. Earlier this year his family threw a 75th surprise birthday party for him. Somehow he became aware of the surprise so he decided to show up two hours early to the party! He came early not to ruin the surprise, but because he was so excited to greet all of his friends as they arrived! A great time was had by all. Bill liked watching TV too, and Johnny Carson and “Married, with Children” were among his favorite shows. He also loved watching the Barrett Jackson auto auctions. Bill was a car nut and even at a young age he could identify a car by sound, able to differentiate the subtleties of each rumble. He was a fast driver and often reminisced about the ’58 Impala he used to own; his favorite car.
Bill’s wife Barbara was the love of his life. They met while they were both working at Great Eastern Mills. Bills took her to a diner for their first date in 1960 and on May 13, 1962 they tied the knot at St. Mary’s RC Church in Pompton Lakes. After a honeymoon to Niagara Falls, they settled into their first apartment in Lyndhurst. They moved to Pompton Lakes on July 1, 1975 to raise their family. Bill and Barbara were simply meant for each other and they loved doing everything together. They went to Atlantic City as often as they could, enjoyed cruises, Aruba, and trips to the Poconos. When Barbara passed away in 2015, Bill was hopelessly heartbroken and he’s missed her terribly ever since. His love for Barbara was stronger than anything else and his wish was to join her for eternity.
Bill is survived by his children; Michele Marro and her boyfriend Jim Donohue of Pompton Lakes, son Anthony Gordon and his wife Jeanne of Flanders, two grandchildren; Danielle Marro of Pompton Lakes, and Anthony Gordon of Flanders, his brothers; Larry Gordon and his wife Eileen of Bushkill, PA, and Richard Gordon and his wife Barbara of N. Carolina, a sister; Patricia of Binghamton, NY, his brother-in-law; John Paduano of Brick, and many nieces, nephews, and very dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory would be appreciated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
