William H. Neurouter, age 87, of Wayne, passed peacefully at home on Thursday, May 16, 2019.
He was born in Newark to Henry and Marie Neurouter and graduated from Pompton Lakes High School. During his high school years he worked on Wayne area dairy farms as he wanted to have cash in his pocket…unlike his friends who had nothing.
Just out of high school he worked as a Television Antenna Installer in Paterson for the Atlantic Television Company. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he had a twenty year career. He had training as a Jet Engine Mechanic, Helicopter Mechanic, and Air Traffic Control during his service. He was proud of having been a Crew Chief for a Boeing B47 Stratojet and worked with B52 Bombers as well. Bill was honorably discharged from the Air Force on May 31, 1972 as a Master Sergeant. He would talk about how his career in the Air Force helped his to see the world having visited Germany, Guam, Africa, England and Thailand twice. He lamented how he never made it to Australia.
Just out of the military William worked as a bartender at Gabriel’s in Wayne. He eventually got a job with the Wayne Township Water Department in Wayne. Bill sat down on a barstool at the Hi-Ho Club in Wayne to talk to his buddy Bob Wiltshire. The stool he sat on happened to be right next to a pretty girl named Maria LaTorraca. They fell in love and married on April 27, 1981 at Wayne Town Hall. They have had a loving marriage of thirty years before Maria’s passing in 2011.
He was the loving step-dad of Mark Nordhausen of Butler and Barbara Pfeffer and her husband Thomas of Mooresville, NC; he was the cherished grandfather of Thomas, Jade, and Luke; much loved brother of the late Richard and Henry Neurouter.
