Yvette Dolores (nee Isaacs) McAndrew, age 78 of Wayne. On September 5, 2012 Mrs. McAndrew passed away due to complications associated with aplastic anemia, a disease she was battling for the past 10 months.

Born on June 19, 1934 to Angela Callender and Hugh Linton Isaacs, Yvette was one of eight children. Yvette was raised and educated in Georgetown, Guyana and followed in her mother’s footsteps to pursue a career in nursing. She began her nursing career at the Georgetown (Public) Hospital in Guyana. In 1968 she emigrated to the United States and joined the staff at Greater Paterson General Hospital (which later became Wayne General Hospital and is currently St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital) where she worked as a Registered Nurse/Charge Nurse on the 7th floor for numerous years. She later became head of the newly formed Endoscopy department and worked there until her retirement in 2000. She was a very dedicated nurse and truly enjoyed helping others.

In 1961 she married her beloved soul mate, Nigel McAndrew. From this union she was blessed with three wonderful children: Newell, Nevin (who passed in 2003) and Norville (Norv).

Upon arriving in the United States, Yvette and her husband first settled in Paterson, New Jersey before moving to Wayne in 1977. Over the years, Yvette has persuaded many other friends and family members to come to America and all of them are grateful to her. She had an enormous heart for family and many of her family members are privileged to call these United States of America “home” because of her influence. She was well loved by all she came in contact with. Her words of wisdom, encouragement and advice were profound. “Thank you, Yvette” from all of us who benefitted from your love.

Yvette was well known for her infectious laughter. She had a wonderful perspective on life and found the humor in most everything. For example, Yvette traveled throughout the world, including the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia, and was well known for bringing back t-shirts and trinkets along with captivating stories of her experiences. Inevitably, Yvette would use an old Guyanese saying or recollection of “what Mother would do,” to make a point, and then burst into laughter. And although Yvette traveled, she was always more comfortable close to home. Yvette loved to entertain at home, surrounded by family and friends, while cooking, catching up, and singing. She liked to cook, but her family will admit that there were some things she was better at, such as singing. One of her favorite songs to sing around the house was “His eyes are on the sparrow” and this hymn brought to light her strong faith in the Lord. Yvette was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Consolation RC Church in Wayne, where she raised her boys in the Catholic faith. She placed great trust in the Lord and she is surely enjoying her Heavenly reward today.

Yvette leaves to mourn her husband Nigel of Wayne; her two sons; Newell and Norv; her daughter in laws; Shelly and Amy; seven grandchildren: Schuyler, Nicholle, Brice, Sterling, Raven, Kara, and Owen; her brother Eric and his wife Sheila Callender; her sisters; Evril Scantlebury and Gloria (Bybe) and her husband Austin Silas; her brother in law Wilton McAndrew and his wife Yvonne; her honorary daughter Laurel Martin, her devoted niece Pauline Robinson; her very dear friend Vera Castle and countless nieces, nephews and friends. The family would also like to thank Pauline Robinson for her assistance during this critical time. Yvette was predeceased by her son Nevin in 2003.

Yvette, you have ran the race, finished the course, fought the good fight and now your resting time is here. You will be sadly and truly missed. We love you dearly.

Giovanna Olga Stengel (nee Carducci) age 57 of the Packanack Lake Section of Wayne died peacefully on Saturday, September 1, 2012.

She was born and raised in Naples Italy and married Christian W. Stengel III on June 5, 1976 in Naples. Giovanna and Christian met when he was stationed at the US Naval Base in Naples Italy.  Christian had the basement apartment in the building where Giovanna's family lived on the sixth floor.  Water

pressure was often an issue for the higher floors in the building and Christian would bring water up to them. Their first formal date was with her family and eating Pizza Margherita. Christian proposed to Giovanna after a Christmas vacation in the United States where she met his parents.  They moved to the Newport Rhode Island Naval Base and lived in New Brunswick, NJ to attend Rutgers University for Criss' Electrical Engineering Degrees.

Both worked in Bowie, Maryland for twelve years before being transferred to  Cary, North Carolina where they lived for seven years before moving to the Packanack Lake Section of Wayne nine years ago. In 1997 Christian retired from work to care for Giovanna full time. They loved being with each other and have had thirty-six years of loving and truly devoted marriage.

Giovanna was a Dental Assistant for seventeen years before a neurological movement disorder called Dystonia ended her working career in 1994.

She loved to be with people, enjoyed chatting, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed putting her working knowledge of five languages to work helping to translate for others.  She also enjoyed making all kinds of crafts which she would give as gifts.

She was the loving wife of Christian W. Stengel III; devoted daughter of Luigi Carducci and his current wife Rosa and the late Renata (nee Meo) Carducci(1977); loved sister of Ornella Carducci of Naples Italy, Alba Saladino and her husband Pasquale of Pomigliano Italy, and Rosella Carducci of Naples; cherished aunt of Riccardo and Marco Saladino

LaVita DeCroce (nee Torre) age 63 of Fort Myers, Florida formerly of Wayne. Passed to her eternal reward in heaven on Wednesday, August 29th, 2012 in Sarasota, Florida. Her daughter Cheryl was often at her bedside providing her mom with all the love and caring that only a daughter could provide.

LaVita was born in Newark where she spent her early childhood years later moving to Belleville with her family. She received her formal education first at the Newark 14th Avenue Grammar School and then at Belleville High School; graduating with the Class of 1967. She had a very happy childhood. Her finest fantasy in her youth was Shirley Temple and she collect Shirley Temple dolls and memorabilia emulating into her life story the spirit of Shirley Temple. Her life was full of music especially the hits of the 50’s including Motown.

LaVita had a strong faith in her life journey and found great meaning in her Roman Catholic faith. Her health was presenting her with many difficulties over the years and things just kept going down hill. Her passing no doubt was a great relief to her especially knowing that her faith in God would bring her to a new life relieving her of her many illnesses. Her wonderful faith became reality in heaven where no pain and worry exist.

Her first work experience lasted one half a day. Her responsibilities including answering telephones and when lunch time rolled around she just knew that that job was not for her and never went back. She decided to study to be a beautician and enrolled in the Capri Beauty School. She became quite skilled as a beautician and worked for numerous beauty shops. As time went on she opened her own beauty parlor in Lincoln Park named “Lavita’s Park Salon”. When she retired from her beauty business she worked as a professional medical biller.

Lavita was graced all of her life with a personality that was effervescently joyous. Always upbeat and ready for fun. She was a delight to be with and as a result had accumulated many wonderful friends. She especially loved to dance to the best of Frank Sinatra hits. She was very organized and a wonderful decorator maintaining her house and surrounds with impeccable good taste and cleanliness at all times.

Her most important dedication in life was her family. She was very loving and caring. When her husband Anthony was set back with his health she took care of him with loving and devoted love. He finally passed away in December 2005 after thirty six years of “wonderful and loving marriage” together.

Surviving to mourn this wonderful wife, mother, grandmother daughter and sister are one daughter Cheryl Makowsky and her husband Michael of Parrish, Florida; one son Anthony DeCroce and his wife Nadia of Highland Lakes; one grandson Dominic DeCroce age three; one sister Jeanette Casciano and her husband Michael of Hewitt; her cherished parents Harry and Beatrice Torre of Fort Myers, Florida. Caring aunt to Janell and Danielle.

She will be laid to rest with her late husband Anthony at the Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield.

Wendel Weiner age 89 of Clifton died peacefully on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.

He was born and raised in Stanisitch, Yugoslavia, where he completed his education. He worked with his father in the family owned furniture factory in Stanisitch and was soon drafted into the German Army. He served on the Russian front where he was seriously wounded losing his left eye on the advance into Moscow. Subsequently he served in the army in Moschendorf, Austria. In 1945 when Germany surrendered he went to Salzburg, Austria to turn in his weapon. He returned to Moschendorf as he had found a cute girl named Rosina Domitrovits there. They fell in love and married on December 28, 1947 in Moschendorf, Austria and have enjoyed sixty-five years of loving and devoted marriage. They came to the United States in 1956 and settled in Paterson and Passaic, before moving to Clifton 45 years ago.

Wendel worked for the Sommer Cabinet Company in Carlstadt through the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 15 out of Hackensack, for over twenty years before retiring in 1985. He had an extremely strong work ethic, was never late for work, and never missed a day of work. After his retirement he worked as a commercial and residential property manager for his son Joseph.

He was the loving husband of Rosina (Domitrovits) Weiner; loving father of Joseph Weiner and his wife Rita of Franklin Lakes; cherished grandfather of Annemarie “Aimee” Galofaro and her husband David of Wayne; Michele Mazzei and her husband Franco of Wayne; Dr. Michael J. Weiner of Franklin Lakes and Dr. Joseph P. Weiner of Brooklyn, NY; dear great-grandfather of Luke Mazzei, Anthony Galofaro, Michael Mazzei, and Gianna Galofaro.

Wendel is best described as a gentle man, hard working, responsible, and a perfectionist. As a hobby he enjoyed raising honeybees and Rosina had many stings to show for it as she helped him with his hives. This hobby has been taught and passed on to his son and grandchildren.

Phocion Lellos age 86 of Wayne died peacefully on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.

He was born and raised in Pearl Street area of Haverhill Massachusetts and soon after graduating from high school he was drafted into the US Navy during World War II. He served from 1944 through 1946 and was Honorably Discharged with distinction as a Quartermaster 3rd Class.

After his service he went to college and graduated from the University of New Hampshire. After college Phocion toured throughout Europe. He worked as a Professional Engineer in the aerospace industry for companies such as Bell and Sikorsky. He started a technical personnel agency in Boston MA.

He met his wife, the late Jean Capolon, while in the Catskill Mountains, they married November 4th, 1961 and lived in Europe before returning to live in Boston MA. They began their family in Massachusetts and moved to the Pines Lake section of Wayne in 1975.

Phocion was a dedicated member of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Wyckoff and sang in their choir for many years.

He enjoyed sailing on Pines Lake, and was always tinkering with his antique Alfa Romeo and Jaguar cars. For many years he sang with the New York Chorale Society.

Phocion was the loving husband of forty-two years to the late Jean (Capolon) Lellos (July 2003); devoted father of Cion Lellos and his partner Jennifer of Mendon, VT, Jason Lellos and his wife Stacy of Wayne, NJ, Brian Lellos of Mason, OH, and Alex Lellos of Doylestown, PA; cherished grandfather of Sophia, Nikolas, Evangeline, and Cassie Lellos; loved brother of Theodore Lellos of Chelmsford, MA, Mel Tsamparlis of Manchester, NH, and the late Solon Lellos.

Louis Zuzzolo age 89 of Wayne passed into life eternal on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 at the Saint Joseph’s Wayne Hospital in Wayne.

He was born in Yonkers, New York and had lived his formative years in Yonkers. He received his formal education at Enrico Fermi High School in Yonkers graduating with the Class of 1940.

Lou had a happy childhood and obtained his first gainful employment in a local luncheonette near his home as a “Soda Jerk”. He soon joined the Army Air Corp and served his military obligation in both Hawaii and the island of Guam. He was severely injured during his service career and held the status of disabled veteran the rest of his life.

He started out on his life journey in Yonkers and later purchase his first home in West Islip on Long Island, NY and later purchased a home in Carmel, New York.

After his service obligation he went to New York University “NYU” and studied accounting He then worked as an accountant for C.I.T. Financial Corporation in Long Island and later of Pepsico, Inc in Purchase, New York.

Lou was invited on a blind date and met a pretty girl named Elizabeth Lyall. They decided to marry in 1954 and Honeymooned in Miami, Florida. Lou and Elizabeth had fifty-eight years of “Loving and Dedicated” marriage together.

Louis was gifted with an outgoing personality causing him to have many friends. His principal dedication was his family and was a good husband and father. He was a very caring father who was very generous in many ways.

He especially enjoyed vacations to Fire Island, New York where his sister had a summer home.

Surviving to mourn this very special man are his wife Elizabeth (nee Lyall) Zuzzolo; one daughter Angela Balcolm and her husband Terrance of Scotia, New York; one son James Zuzzolo and his wife Karen of Glen Rock; his sister Sadie Hall and her husband John of New York City. Lou was predeceased by his very special companion Smokey who was a cocker spaniel.

Andrew Joseph Lucchesi age 91 of Pequannock died peacefully on Tuesday August 28 at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pequannock.

Andrew was born in New York City and was raised in Astoria before moving to Great River, NY where he raised his family with his loving wife Lillian. After living in Great River for over 47 years, Andrew and Lillian recently moved to Pequannock to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

He worked for Colonial Airlines for a time before becoming a New York City Fireman. Andrew was a fireman for 25 years in New York before retiring about thirty-five years ago. During his career he received the Distinguished Award Medal for saving the lives of 3 women while on the job. He was a member of the NYC Fireman’s Honor Society. Before becoming a Fireman, Andrew proudly served his country in the Navy during World War II at Guadalcanal.

Andrew was a member of the American Legion as well as the Suffolk County Retired Fireman’s Association. He was a parishioner of St Mary’s RC church in East Islip while he lived in New York. Andrew also volunteered his time to the study and distribution of plant life to various parks and recreation areas in Long Island, NY.

Andrew cherished 57 years of marriage to his wife Lillian; he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Andrew was an avid fisherman, enjoyed cooking, and loved to travel with his family.

Andrew is survived by his wife Lillian (nee DelPonte), his Daughter Joanne Delaney and her husband Robert of Ridgewood, his son Andrew Lucchesi and his wife Dianne of Wayne, his son Paul Lucchesi and his wife Sophie of Chicago, and nine grandchildren; Sara, Jack, Michael, Andrew, Cristina, PJ, Francesca, Tom, and Charlie.

Hedwig Herzog (nee Kosakowski) age 92 of the Packanack Lake section of Wayne died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 25, 2012.

She was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and raised in Coatesville Pennsylvania having graduated from Coatesville High School with the Class of 1936. She graduated from Beaver College, now known as Arcadia University, in Glenside Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science Degree in English with the Class of 1940. She went on to receive her Masters Degree in Library Science from Drexel University in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.

After college she got a job with the Brooklyn Library in New York City where she worked from 1951 – 1953. She married and raised her family returning to the workforce in 1963 working for the Pompton Lakes Board of Education in New Jersey until 1966 and for the Little Falls Board of Education from 1966 – 1972. She then worked for the Singer Kearfott Corporation in Totowa until her retirement in 1984.

She met her husband William G. Herzog while on a blind date. Their first date was in Morristown and they soon fell in love. They married at Saint Stanislaus Church in Coatesville Pennsylvania on June 21, 1953 and honeymooned at Niagara Falls New York. They enjoyed fifty-two years of a loving, complimentary, opposites attract marriage until William’s passing on January 30, 2005.

Hedwig enjoyed bowling in her younger years but her true passion was playing Pinochle, Bridge, and doing crossword puzzles. She even won $25.00 in a New York Times crossword challenge many years ago.

She was the loving wife of the late William G. Herzog (2005); devoted mother of Carol Herzog of Wayne, and Timothy Herzog and his wife Rosalind of Ridgewood; cherished grandmother of Laura Herzog, Teresa Rose Herzog, William Herzog, and Claire Herzog; dear sister of Helen Alejko of Ephrata Pennsylvania, and the late Raymond Kasakowski.

Ada Cauwenberghs (nee DeRuyscher) age 80 of Wayne died peacefully on Saturday, August 25, 2012.

She was born in Paterson and raised in Wayne having graduated from Pompton Lakes High School with the Class of 1949.

Ada was serving as a Lab Technician at the Bergen Pines Hospital in Paramus when she met a TB patient named Henry Cauwenberghs. When Henry was well enough he checked himself out of the hospital and took Ada to the movies. They fell in love and Henry asked Ada’s mother for her hand in marriage and then asked to borrow the $2.00 it would cost to secure the wedding license. They married at the Preakness Christian Reformed Church on Valley Road in Wayne on January 16, 1949. They drove to Fairfax Virginia for their honeymoon in an Oldsmobile that was so old they prayed every mile that it would make it. They had a loving, devoted, and as Henry stated “perfect” sixty-three years of marriage and rarely had an argument.

As Ada’s youngest daughter entered middle school she decided to go to college. She graduated from William Paterson University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Teaching and continued at the university to secure her Masters Degree in Special Education. She worked for the Wayne Board of Education for several years, Our Lady of the Valley School in Wayne, then the Haledon Board of Education for many years before retiring in 2001.

Ada is best described as an outgoing person who was kind, polite to a fault, and extremely honest.

She was the loving wife of Henry Cauwenberghs; devoted mother of Henry Cauwenberghs and his wife Judy of Canajoharia, NY, and Dawn DiPaola and her husband John of Wayne, and the late Diana and Roger Cauwenberghs; cherished grandmother of Jennifer, Joseph, and Daniel Cauwenberghs, and Jeffrey, Kristen, and Stephen DiPaola; and four great-grandchildren.

Jennie Boer (nee Koster) age 86 of Kinnelon passed on Thursday, August 23, 2012.

She was born on January 4, 1926 in Hilversum, Netherlands and when she was just eighteen months old her family moved to the United States. The family came by ship into New York City and settled in Prospect Park New Jersey. Jennie went to the eighth grade before having to go to work to help support the family. She got a job at the Faber Laundry in Haledon where she ironed shirts. She met John Boer at Church in Passaic and the fell in love and married on March 21, 1946. They attempted to go on their honeymoon but after too many flat tires (you couldn’t buy tires as WWII was just concluding and rubber was nowhere to be found) they returned home. Jennie lived in Wayne for forty-one years and lived in Kinnelon for the past twenty-four years.

Jennie was a devoted member of the Free Reformed Church of Pompton Plains.

She is best described as a reserved person with all but family with whom she would share her many and sometimes strong opinions. She also loved to drive and purposely made a detour through North Dakota so she could tell everyone she has driven in all 48 contiguous States. For a number of years she also drove a school bus for the Netherlands Reformed Christian School in Pompton Plains.

Jennie was the loving wife of the late John Boer(2002); devoted mother of Geri Fontana and her husband Philip of Montville, Sarah Okken and her husband John of Pequannock, Jennie Reganess and her husband John of Newton, John Boer and his wife Carole of Jackson, Corie Rieder of Lord’s Valley, PA, and Dereck Boer and his wife Catherine of Kinnelon; dear sister of Evelyn Hoogmoed of North Haledon, and Jasper Koster and his wife Mary of Prospect Park; cherished grandmother of 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Frances Kapp (nee Bennett) “Mom Mom” age 86 of the Packanack Lake Section of Wayne died peacefully, with the comfort of holding her granddaughter Sara’s hand, on Thursday, August 23, 2012.

She was born in Scranton Pennsylvania and raised in New Jersey having graduated from Barringer High School in Newark with the Class of 1943.

She met John Kapp at Joe Keeleys’ Tavern in Newark “only 72 steps from Broad Street”. John was told to propose to Fran by his mother who said “marry that girl and make it legal.” They married on September 29, 1945 at Saint Bridget’s Church on Plane Street in Newark. They honeymooned in Virginia Beach and have enjoyed sixty-seven years of loving and devoted marriage.

Having moved many times as a young girl it was Fran’s desire to have one place to call home. Fran and John bought their home in the Packanack Lake Section of Wayne for $14,200.00 sixty years ago. They have raised their family and lived into their retirement years in this same home.

Fran loved theatre and has directed and acted in many local plays. The Packanack Players was very dear to her heart. During the 1960’s and 1970’s she also helped to run the Miss Wayne Pageant. She volunteered for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation’s Northern New Jersey Chapter and also taught CCD for several years at Holy Spirit RC Church in Pequannock.

Raising eight children would be a challenge for most but with her “iron hand, a wire hanger, or the large metal spoon from the kitchen” she had no trouble keeping her kids on the straight and narrow. Fran was also an excellent cook and her special touch on Pot Roast and Potato Pancakes (John’s favorite) will be greatly missed.

Patricia “Pat” Marino (Hodgson) age 68 of Wayne died peacefully on Monday, August 20, 2012.

She was born in Cedar Grove and raised in Pompton Plains having graduated from Pequannock High School with the Class of 1962. When she married she lived in Paterson and Lincoln Park before moving to Wayne thirty-six years ago.

She met her husband Douglas Marino while working at Meyer Brothers Department Store in Paterson as they were both working in the administration offices for 90 cents per hour. Their first date was to the movies in Paterson and soon Doug asked Pat to marry him at her parents home. They married on November 7, 1964 at the Italian Methodist Church on 21st Avenue in Paterson. Their reception was held at Lanieve’s Restaurant in Haledon and they honeymooned in Quebec City Canada. Pat and Doug have enjoyed forty-eight years of loving marriage.

After raising her two children Pat worked for the State Farm Insurance Company in Parsippany before retiring in 2007.

She was a very friendly person who would help just about anyone. She loved her children and grandchildren, enjoyed golf and the occasional trip to the slot machines.

She was the loving wife of Douglas Marino; devoted mother of Marcie Romberger and her husband Karl of Berwyn, PA, and Mark Marino of Wayne and his fiancé Sophia; cherished grandmother of Christian, Elise, and Julia Romberger, and Mika Marino.

Josephine “Josie” Cialone age 92 of Wayne died peacefully on Saturday, August 18, 2012.

She was born in Paterson where she lived a happy childhood. She received her formal education at Paterson Grammar School No. 5.

Josie, as a teenager, needed to find work and she went to a local factory and inquired about employment. She filled out their application and was accepted for a position. Something told her that she should learn more about her potential work responsibilities and she proceeded to ask a few questions. At that point she learned that this company’s main product was condoms. To make a long story short she went into an emotional panic that included a flushed red face, and told them in a forthright manner that she definitely could not do that kind of work. Over the years this life experience was the subject of much good kidding and delightful interfamily humor.

Her sister Teresa was of dating age and she was being pursued by a gentlemen named Rocco Cialone. Teresa being a party girl wanted nothing to do with Rocco and at that point Rocco took an interest in Josephine. They decided to join their hearts in marriage and married on February 19, 1944 and had thirty-one years of extremely devoted and loving marriage together until Rocco’s passing on February 4th, 1975.

Her principal focus in life was her family and when you met Josie she made you a member of that family.

Wayne residents will recall that the Cialone family had green houses and a farm on Valley Road in Wayne. They were highly respected as a warm and popular part of the Wayne citizenry. Josie would reach out to neighbors and help them with their domestic chores, cooking and house cleaning and in particular helping to raise the fifteen children in the VanPeenen family.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her nieces Kathleen Fox of Butler, Annette Meyer of Fredon, Charles Puglia of Dresher, PA, Michael Puglia of Taylors, SC, Joseph Cialone of FL, Philip Cialone of FL, Paul Cialone of CT, and BettyLou Breen of Lincoln Park.

She was predeceased by her loving parents Michael and Antoinette (Rosciano) Puglia; she was also predeceased by her brothers Charles and John Puglia, and Teresa Puglia.

Katherine E. “Kathy” Gibson age 52 of Wayne died peacefully on Friday, August 17, 2012 at the Hospice of NJ in Wayne.

She was a lifelong resident of Packanack Lake in Wayne having graduated from Wayne Valley High School with the Class of 1978.

Kathy's enjoyed a long career as part of the Eastern Christian Children’s Retreat family in Wyckoff, for over thirty-five years.

She was an avid animal lover, a generous volunteer, a lover of music with a beautiful singing voice. One of her most fulfilling efforts was helping out at A Pathway to Hope animal rescue in Passaic County.

Kathy had a brilliant wit and an infectious laugh that will be greatly missed by all she touched.

She was the loving daughter of the late John Donald Sr and Audrey (Mason) Gibson; sister of David Gibson of Knoxville, TN, John Donald Gibson Jr. of Wayne, and Timothy Gibson of Highland Lakes; aunt of Brian and James Gibson.

Anthony “Mickey” Hanusek age 87 of Wayne died peacefully on Thursday, August 16, 2012 with his wife Dorothy by his side.

He was born in Union City New Jersey where his grandmother gave him the name “Mickey” as he was a Jr and she didn’t want any grandson of hers going through life being called “Jr”. Mickey graduated from Cliffside Park High School with the Class of 1942.

A few months after graduating from High School Mickey enlisted in the United States Navy and served during WWII. Mickey and his father were both serving in the Navy but only once came close to seeing each other during their service. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 28, 1947 and soon had a job with the Ford Motor Company. On January 14, 1950 Mickey was called in from the Navy Reserves to serve during the Korean War. Upon his again honorable discharge he returned to the Ford Motor Company having worked in Edgewater, New York City, and Teterboro before retiring as a Field Manager in 1951.

When Mickey was home from his second stint in the Navy one of the neighborhood kids took him out to meet a group of younger neighbors. This group would often go roller skating and dancing together. This is where Mickey met the love of his life Dorothy Olsen. Mickey asked if Dorothy would wait to marry him after his discharge from the service. She responded “no ring…no strings”. On his Christmas leave he asked Dorothy’s father if he approved of the marriage and he gave his blessing. They were married on Valentines Day, February 14, 1953 and went to Lake Placid New York for a skiing honeymoon. They have enjoyed a “good life” together for the past fifty-nine years.

Mickey was Dorothy’s Bionic Man. He had two heart attacks in 1951, triple bypass surgery in 1952, and a third heart attack in 1995. On a ski trip he decided the trails were too easy so he entered the woods where he broke several ribs after hitting a boulder. He broke both of his knees while painting over the garage and the ladder slipped away; had a stroke in 2001 that affected his short term memory; broke one hip after falling down the cellar stairs; fell in the living room at home and broke the other hip; had prostate cancer that was treated with radiation and seed implants; and was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm which he never had treated. It seems no surprise that the family wishes memorial donations be made to the Wayne Memorial First Aid Squad.

Mickey was the loving husband of Dorothy (Olsen) Hanusek; devoted father of Michael Hanusek and his wife Karen of Franklin; cherished grandfather of Eric and his wife Kristen Hanusek of Ledgewood; and proud great-grandfather of Violet Hanusek.

Anna Brigida (nee Semeraro), age 83 of Wayne, died peacefully on Thursday, August 16, 2012. Her family was gathered at her bedside.

Anna was born in Paterson and moved to Italy with her family when she was just a young girl. She lived in Italy through her formative years and met her husband Frank there. The two of them were married in Martina Franca, Italy. Frank owned a café/restaurant in Italy and he was a renowned baker and chef. Together, they decided to move to America and Frank sold his business. They settled in Paterson and raised their family. The two of them enjoyed ballroom dancing during their many loving years together before Frank passed in 1985.

Anna had worked at the Manchester High School as a cafeteria aid for nearly 20 years before retiring just this past June. She loved her time at the school and enjoyed all the children and staff that she became acquainted with over the years. Her coworkers treated her to a special retirement dinner at The Manor in West Orange and she had a wonderful time.

Anna was very involved with several social groups and she always kept a close group of friends. She was a member of the Italian American Club of Totowa and the Senior Citizens Club of Totowa. Anna was always taking trips with them to Atlantic City where they would enjoy a good time together. She was also a devout member of St. Gerard’s RC Church in Paterson for many years and you could find her at almost every Saturday Mass.

Family was very important to Anna. She was with her children and grandchildren on a daily basis. She and her sister Angelina were the dearest of friends.

Anna is survived by her four devoted children; Frank and his wife Debra of Wayne, Gino and his wife Susan of Wayne, Antoniette DelPizzo and her husband James of North Haledon, and Susan Inturrisi and her husband Paul of North Haledon, her sister Angelina Scala and her husband Carmen of Wayne, her brother Frank Semeraro and his wife Barbara of Egg Harbor, NJ, and nine grandchildren; Gina and Guy Rose, Frank Brigida, Michael Brigida, Anthony Inturrisi, Christine Brigida, Nicholas Inturrisi, Dana DelPizzo, Justin Brigida, and Alexa Inturrisi.

Carl J. Willekes, age 50 of Pompton Plains, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Carl had been a lifelong resident of Pompton Plains and graduated from Pequannock High School in 1980.

Carl was employed at the Wayne offices of ISP, formerly GAF Corporation, for twenty three years before leaving in 2009. He had served in the mail room and typically worked six days per week. During his tenure he became familiar with everyone there. Of the more than one thousand employees at ISP, Carl knew all of them by name and their job title. He had an incredible memory and his family recalls how he could remember details of events that occurred years ago, as well as church sermons from any given Sunday. Carl remembered everything.

Carl was afflicted with Myotonic Dystrophy which causes a slow degeneration of the muscles. During the past several years the disease had taken its toll on him, but he was never bitter or angry about his condition. He knew God had a plan for him and he placed his trust in the Lord.

Over the years, Carl did have the opportunity to travel and he had visited family and friends in the Yakima Valley of Washington State. His family has vineyards there and the Valley was a beautiful place that he loved to visit.

Carl is survived by his devoted parents; John and Johanna Willekes of Pompton Plains, his sister Jo-Ellen Dolengo and her husband Brian of Bloomingdale, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

Frank Baird, age 81 of Wayne, died on Saturday, August 11, 2012. He was a resident of Wayne since 1947.

Frank had grown up in Fairfield and moved to Wayne with this family in 1947. His parents had purchased a large home that included a farm. Their home had actually been a tea house along the Morris Canal, which had run right through their property many years earlier. With the development of Route 23 through Wayne, much of their family land was taken to widen the highway and their home was removed to make way for the Alps Road exit from Route 23 South. The home was historic but local efforts to preserve the house and relocate it proved unsuccessful and their home was razed. That was a sad occasion for Frank and his family. He continued living in his own home on what remained of his family farm and enjoyed having horses, chickens, and breeding dogs. Throughout the years, Frank bred countless dogs, in excess of a few hundred. Most of the dogs were hunting breeds and Frank enjoyed training them to do just that. He enjoyed bird hunting himself and enjoyed watching the dogs work their skills. His favorite pastime was certainly softball. He played for many years and formed his own team; the “Baird Bandits”. He was an excellent pitcher and served as league commissioner for a few years.

Frank had been a Wayne police officer for during the 1960’s before becoming a design engineer. He was very mechanically inclined and a great problem solver. He was the kind of guy that always had a project that he was working on. His son Dan recalls that anytime you saw Frank with a piece of paper, lines and dimensions drawn all over it, you were in for another project. Some of his most memorable designs were created for M&M Mars Company and their candy making process, at Sony Corporation, and many other manufacturing businesses in the area. His mind was always active and his creative skill never withered. He was never one to pass on an opportunity either, and he owned a used car sales lot on Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne for many years.

Frank is survived by his loving wife Pat, his daughter Sue Adam and her husband Vic of Long Valley, and one son; Dan Baird and his wife Kim of West Milford, three grandchildren; Austin Baird of West Milford, Justin Adam and his wife Emily of Long Valley, NJ, and Michael Adam and his wife Heather of Hackettstown, NJ, two great-grandchildren; Matthew Adam of Hackettstown and Brooke Adam of Long Valley. Frank is also survived by his dear friend and former wife, Barbara Baird of Long Valley.

Elizabeth McEwan. Nienstedt (nee Everett) age 95 of Wayne passed through the gate of heaven on Saturday, August 11, 2012. At the moment of her peaceful passing her faith turned to God’s promised reality.

She was born in New York City and had lived in Edgewater, Hackensack and then moved to Haskell. She lived in Wayne the last three years.

Elizabeth received her formal education at the Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood graduating with the Class of 1934.

She very much enjoyed travel and over the years visited South Africa, Iceland, England, Scotland, the Panama Canal Zone and all across the United States. Her at home hobbies included crocheting, jigsaw puzzles playing cards and rummicubes.

She was employed at the Union Camp later International Paper as a comptometer operator for over thirty-five years before retiring in 1982.

She was a dedicated member of the Wanaque Reformed Church in Wanaque for over fifty years and always remained spiritually connected with her church. While at home in Haskell she especially enjoyed the company of her cats Mischief, Cheerios and Mickey.

Elizabeth was gifted with an outgoing personality- she was generous and kind with a witty sense of humor. These qualities graced her with many friendships throughout her life journey.

Her primary and most important dedication in life was to her family. She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her children and grandchildren with all of her heart.

Elizabeth’s husband Alfred Nienstedt passed away in 1984 and her brother Harry Everett predeceased her on March 2, 1988.

Surviving to enjoy the memories of their wonderful mom and nana are one son Donald Nienstedt and his wife Sandi of Fair Lawn; two daughters Elsie Glinka and her husband Jim of Durango, Colorado and Roberta Trudell and her husband Mark of West Milford. Six grandchildren including Alyssa Nienstedt, Allison Glinka, Marilyn Glinka and her husband Michael. Matthew, Brandon and Kristin Trudell. Her dear cousin Ruth (McCutcheon) Crastan and her husband Claude.

Bruce "Chip" Raymur Bennett age 56 of Oak Ridge died Thursday, August 9, 2012 with the comfort of his family by his side while on vacation in Aruba.

Chip was the son of Raymur Bennett who died in August of 1999 and Elizabeth Brooks (Kirschbaum) who died in May 2011.He was born in Paterson and raised in the Packanack Lake Section of Wayne. Chip graduated from Wayne Valley High School with the Class of 1973. He attended Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg Pennsylvania.

Chip began a lifelong career in the automobile industry at the gas pumps of the Shell Station located at the intersection of French Hill Road and Alps Road. Always a mechanic at heart he worked for Goodyear Tire in Wayne, Goodyear Tire in Parsippany, ETD on Route 23 in Wayne, STS on Route 46 in Denville, and Passaic Valley Tire in Little Falls. Chip taught an auto mechanic class at the Passaic County Community College and eventually went out on his own establishing Chip Bennett Master Mechanic auto repair business in Oak Ridge.

Chip is best described as a selfless, easy going, personable, compassionate, comical, laid back, stubborn, and often positive personality. He met his wife Susan Minarick while at Wayne Valley High School. Their first date was sitting on the front porch of Chip’s father’s home drinking wine during a lightning storm. They got engaged immediately after a ski trip to Killington, Vermont. Chip and Susan were married on March 8, 1980 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Wayne. They honeymooned in Aruba where they enjoyed many more vacations during their thirty-two years of loving marriage.

He enjoyed sports and coached many of his children’s soccer, baseball, and softball teams over the years. He personally enjoyed playing volleyball in a recreation league for many years.

Chip was the loving husband of Susan (Minarick) Bennett; devoted father of Michael and his fiancé Ashley, and Lisa and her boyfriend Chris; dear step son of June Bennett of Kinnelon and step brother of her children Barry Reed, Barbara Williams, Bill Reed, Bob Reed and their families.

John Gellene age 82 of Wayne passed away on Friday, August 3, 2012 with the comfort of his family by his side.

The son of Alfred and Rose Gellene, John was born on February 28, 1930 in Paterson, where he also grew up. As a young boy in the 1930s and 1940s John loved sports, following the New York Giants baseball team and serving as the unofficial mascot of the Paterson Panthers of the American Professional Football Association, an early pro football team that played at Hinchliffe Stadium and for which his father once played. He loved to listen to the radio drama “The Shadow.”

John attended St. George’s Grammar School in Paterson, moving on to St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, where he served as manager of the basketball team and, with best friend William “Bib” Coyle, earned the nickname of “The Gold Dust Twins.” The two pulled a number of mischievous pranks. In one, John was credited with was switching the math books with the English books in the school library. As a young man, John worked as a lifeguard on Bradley Beach at the Jersey Shore, where his family owned a home in Belmar.

John graduated from St. Peters Class of 1947. After attending Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., John graduated from St Peters College, receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1952.

He was drafted into the United States Army and served with the Army Chemical Corps during the Korean War. Honorably discharged on August 20, 1954, John attained the rank of corporal and was given the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Throughout his life he would remain a strong supporter of the U.S. military, and was especially proud when his son David was nominated by Sen. Bill Bradley to attend the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.

The night before John was to join the service he proposed to Clare Ryan, who had first caught his eye in grammar school. Clare went on to attend a different high school, St. John’s High School, so John would attend functions there, hoping to gain her attention. He finally succeeded during a St. John’s dance. Their first official date took place at the New Jersey Shore, where Clare went with several family members, all of whom had dinner at the shore home of John’s parents at Belmar. After dinner, John asked Clare to the movies. They left their families behind to see “Great Expectations.” On April 25, 1953, they married at St George’s RC Church in South Paterson and honeymooned in Bermuda.

John had a lifelong dedication his Catholic faith. He was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley RC Church in Wayne and a member of the Holy Name Society at Holy Cross Church in Wayne for many years. At Our Lady of the Valley Church he was a member of the Adoration Society Chapel and committed himself to serving several hours each week. He also dedicated himself to passing on his faith to his six children; all attended Our Lady of the Valley School and DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne. John also supported Catholic charitable efforts to help others. At St. Joseph’s Home for the Elderly in Totowa, John was a regular visitor. Keeping a handwritten list of birthdays of each of the residents in his desk at home, John would purchase corsages and present each of the residents with them personally on their birthdays.

After his service in the Army John found work as a salesman with the Refined Products Company in Rutherford. He later founded his own company, J&G Sales in Wayne, taking the name from the initials of his first and last names and doing some of his early paperwork on his oldest daughter’s “Shirley Temple” table. After more than 40 years, he retired in his early 70s.

His primary hobby was golf. He played each Wednesday and Saturday, becoming intimately familiar with every green and fairway at the North Jersey Country Club in Wayne, where he was a member for more than 50 years. For years he vowed to break 80 until he finally did, and along the way scored several holes in one, including one whose celebration was cut short when he left so he could see his son, Gregory, off to his senior prom.

John remained an avid sports fan. He was passionate about the San Francisco Giants, keeping his boyhood loyalties to the team, and the Dallas Cowboys, despite having New York Giants season tickets for many years. Another social activity for many years was his involvement in the Italian Circle Social Club in Paterson. John was proud of his duel Italian-Irish heritage. His father Alfred emigrated from Italy through Ellis Island.

John was relentlessly curious – about politics, world events, culture, business, local issues and numerous other matters. He loved history, from Alexis de Tocqueville to Abraham Lincoln to Alexander Hamilton. An avid newspaper reader, he would pore over several each day, zeroing in on the Opinion sections. A man of strong conviction, he loved to engage in quick-witted conversations about that day’s political controversies, foreign developments, economic news or an opinion piece he had just read, often beginning by asking others what they thought and presenting them with scenarios involving a hypothetical character he often referred to, “Jimmy Jones.”

John’s main preoccupation, however, was his family, which now numbers six children and 19 grandchildren. For years John organized reunions involving dozens of family members -- children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members at the Belmar home, giving everyone an opportunity to catch up and eat his well done barbecued ribs. He installed a flagpole at the Belmar home, where he not only would fly the U.S flag but the state flag of whatever child of his and their family happened to be visiting. He was fascinated by what his children and grandchildren were doing with their lives, and would often offer advice in the form of a wise adage. His grandchildren knew him for his endearing playfulness, the ease with which he could make them laugh and his loving spirit.

He was the loving husband of 59 years to Clare (nee Ryan) Gellene; devoted father of Denise Gellene Bates and her husband James of Arcadia, CA, John G. Gellene and his wife Jean of New York City, Gregory Gellene and his wife Deborah of Lubbock, TX, Lisa Gallagher and her husband Eugene of Mahwah, David Gellene and his wife Ellen of Yorktown, VA, and Matthew Gellene and his wife Beth of Needham, MA; cherished grandfather of 19 grandchildren; loved brother of Albert Gellene and his wife Lucinda of MD, and the late Alfred Gellene, Leo Gellene, and Rosemary Gellene. John’s older brother, Joseph, passed away as a young boy.

Doris Ciavarella (nee Pedrin) age 79 of Wayne died peacefully on Friday, August 3, 2012.

She was born in Jersey City and lived in a four family home in Cliffside Park where they rented out the other three apartments in the home. She also lived in Garfield, East Paterson, Wayne and Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains before returning to Wayne.

After raising her children, and being inspired by teaching CCD for many years at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Wayne, Doris went to William Paterson College and graduated Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education with a minor is special education.

She taught for the Wayne Board of Education having taught 3 rd grade at the Ryerson Elementary School, special education at the James Fallon Elementary School, and elementary education at the Packanack School before retiring in 1981.

She met her husband Anthony Ciavarella while dancing at the Palisades Amusement Park overlooking New York City. They married on October 25, 1955 at St. Michaels RC Church in Paterson and honeymooned in Bermuda. They enjoyed forty-seven years of a loving and devoted marriage before Anthony’s passing in 2002.

The family enjoyed many years of vacations at Lake George in New York. The “hook was set in their lip” after visiting Holiday House on Lake George. Since then three generations of Ciavarella’s have garnished wonderful memories from their summers there.

Doris was the loving wife of the late Anthony A. Ciavarella (2002); loving mother of Steven Ciavarella and his wife Larisa; Paul Ciavarella and his wife Eileen of Pompton Plains, Michael Ciavarella and his wife Theresa; John Ciavarella and his wife Donna of Wayne; cherished grandmother of Lauren, Brandon, Maggie, John, Rachel, Christopher, Michael, Matthew, Heather, and Anthony; loved sister of Elsie Palermo of Bergenfield, and Joseph Pedrin of Oradell.

Gloria J. Frigo (nee Favaro), age 84 of Wayne and formerly of Cliffside Park, died on Wednesday, August 1, 2012. Her family was at her bedside.

Gloria was born in Fairview, NJ and grew up in Fort Lee. In 1957, at a local dance, she met Vladimiro Frigo. The two of them hit it off right from the start and they were married in 1958. They first settled in Fort Lee before moving to Cliffside Park, where they raised their family. Gloria and Vlad enjoyed forty one years together of a very loving marriage. They worked hard at their marriage and set a great example for their children. They were wonderful parents and had been completely devoted to their family throughout their lives. Their family photo albums sum it up rather well; Gloria and Vlad are either hugging, or kissing, or dancing in just about every photo. Vlad passed in 1999 and shortly thereafter Gloria moved to Wayne to live with her daughter.

Gloria was an excellent cook. Every Sunday she made her sauce and would package it up to give out to everyone in her family. If you were feeling sick, she would make you soup and if you were lucky it would be her delicious minestrone. She passed some of these traditions down to her grandchildren too. If she wasn’t cooking, she was probably cleaning. Keeping an immaculately clean house was her pride and joy. Gloria’s children recall summer vacation at their beach house, where their mother was a bit of a sun worshiper. She loved hanging out with her family and soaking up the sun’s rays. Then, at 3 o’clock every day, she would have her gin and tonic before beginning to cook dinner.

She was a fun woman to be around, always having fun. She was a wonderful mother and an even better grandmother – “Nonna” to her four grandchildren. They will all miss her dearly.

Gloria is survived by her two daughters; Gina Garcia and her husband Jay of Fair Lawn, NJ, and Leanna Van Steenburg and her husband Wayne of Wayne, four grandchildren; Christina Hutt of Las Vegas, Justin Garcia of Fair Lawn, Ali Garcia of Fair Lawn, and Nicole Barrows of South Windsor, Connecticut, and two great-grandchildren; Joshua and Anthony Barrows of Connecticut. She was predeceased by her daughter Gloria Jean Hutt in 2009, and by her husband Vladimiro in 1999.

Frieda Peterson (nee Smith) age 94 of Danville, California passed to her eternal reward peacefully on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at the home of her daughter Carol who loved and cared for her mother in her autumn years.

Frieda was a resident of Wayne from 1963 until 1972 living in the Cardinal Way neighborhood in the Packanack Woods area in Wayne. Great sadness coursed into her life when her loving husband Carl died in 1969 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

While living in Wayne she and her husband were active members of Saint Timothy’s Lutheran Church.

Frieda was a Certified Public Accountant and worked for the Exxon/Mobil Corporation for over thirty years. She was transferred to Houston, Texas in 1972 and continued to work there until her retirement in 1983. She then moved to Tucson, Arizona and proceeded to travel all over the world.

Frieda was an accomplished photographer, seamstress, painter but most of all a wonderful mother and grandmother. When her health started to decline, she moved to California to be near her daughter. She had several Miniature Schnauzers who were her “dog children”.

Frieda is survived by her daughter Carol and her husband Dermit Drohan of Danville, California and two cherished grandchildren Jennifer and Kyle Drohan.

Marie Celeste (nee Quagliana), age 78 of Lions Head Lake in Wayne, passed on Saturday, July 28, 2012. Her passing was quiet and peaceful with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born in Jersey City and lived her formative years in Union City. She had a very happy childhood and received her formal education at Edison Grammar School in Union City and then at Emerson High School also in Union City graduating with the Class of 1952. Her favorite activity in High School was being a Majorette in the high school Band.

Marie was very devoted to her Roman Catholic Faith and was a Parishioner at Saint Anthony’s church in Union City. While living in Wayne, she was an active member of Our Lady of Consolation RC Church in Wayne. She and her husband Nick ran also ran the Our Lady of Consolation Seniors Club for the past two years.

Nicholas and Marie met at a dance held at Saint Anthony’s Church in Union City. They courted for two years and then decided to marry. Their wedding date was October 17, 1954. They had a “considerate and supportive” relationship. The final result was that they had a “loving, affectionate and understanding” marriage together for fifty-eight years.

Marie was a very loving mother always concerned about her son Nicholas and her daughter Karen. She was the best Mother in the whole world. When grandchildren arrived in her life journey, things even got better because she loved them to pieces. Her grandchildren were the highlight of her life.

She was the beloved wife of Nicholas Celeste of Wayne for fifty eight years; loving mother of Nicholas Celeste of Flemington and Karen Zaccaria and her husband John of Wayne; loving sister of Theresa Acquaviva and her husband Jerry; and three grandchildren; Angelina Zaccaria, Nicholas and Matthew Celeste.

Laurie Sayers-Bertrand age 49 of Pompton Plains passed to her eternal home on Saturday, July 28, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Her passing was quiet and peaceful, while receiving the loving care of her family members who were at her bedside.

She was born in Pequannock Township and had lived her happy childhood years in the Lions Head Lake Village of Wayne. Laurie received her formal education at Albert Payson Terhune Elementary School then at Schuyler Colfax Middle School advancing to Wayne Hills High School where she graduated with the Class of 1980. At Wayne Hills she enjoyed the Skiing Team and the Tennis Program. Because of her abilities and proficiency, she was offered Scholarships to C.W. Post University in Long Island NY.

Laurie was gifted with a high level of intelligence and ambition and pursued the subjects of computer programming at the Computer Processing Institute in Paramus, NJ and then Computer Graphics at Pratt Institute in New York City. She started her own company in 1995, On-Line Solutions, Inc, and rapidly became successful and known for her effective and reliable consulting skills on JD Edwards World Software business applications. Her company still continues to operate under the leadership of her beloved husband.

She was working at the Castrol Automotive Oil corporate offices on Valley Road in Wayne where she met Luis Bertrand. After a courtship of five years their love for each other just grew and they decided to get married. They married at the Preakness Reformed Church on Church Lane in Wayne on September 30, 1995. They were “Soul Mates in Mutual Love” and shared their strong passion for Tennis, Skiing, and Computer Application Systems; and they had a wonderful marriage together.

Laurie’s most important life dedication was to her family. She was the best mother in the whole world.

Sadness visited her life when in September 2011 her mother Audrey Mills – Sayers passed away.

Surviving to cherish the memories of this wonderful person in their lives are her husband Luis Bertrand; three sons including twins Ethan and Dean Bertrand age sixteen and Sean Bertrand age eleven all at home; her father Charlie Sayers and his wife Dot of Butler, and sisters Beverley Gaudio and her husband Frank, Jane Richards and her husband David of Las Vegas, Nevada; Ashley Sayers of Butler; one brother Sean Patalita and his wife Erika of Stockholm.

Claire F. Ludwig of Wayne, NJ died on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson. Her passing was quiet and peaceful having had her family lovingly by her bedside.

She was born September 1, 1933 to David and Isabel Nash and raised in Paterson. She later lived in the Packanack Lake area of Wayne where she and her husband raised their family. After their children left home, they built their dream house in Franklin Lakes and resided there for many years. In retirement she and Bill split their time between the Four Seasons in Wayne and Bonita Springs, Florida.

Claire graduated from Saint Bonaventure’s High School with the class of 1950. She went on to study secretarial skills for two years and obtained a secretarial position at Curtis Wright Corporation in Caldwell

.

She and her husband  Bill had known each other since they were around eight years old.. They lived only a block apart in the Totowa section of Paterson; however they didn’t start dating until Claire was was out of high school. They married on September 20, 1952 and had sixty years of loving and dedicated marriage together.

Claire will always be remembered for her dedication to family. She raised four sons with much love and care. Her children recall Mom on the sidelines of every football game, rain or shine, rooting for her sons’ teams. Later on in life, she was a dedicated fan to her grandchildren in all their sporting endeavors. However her most cherished family moments were spending the Christmas holidays together.

Her favorite pastimes were shopping, traveling, fine dining, and playing tennis. You would often find her on the Packanack Tennis courts, and later on at the Indian Trail Club, enjoying her favorite sport. After retirement, Claire and Bill were able to travel the world together, visiting exotic places such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Paris, and Rome.

Claire was very dedicated to her Roman Catholic faith. She and her husband Bill were founding members of Our Lady of The Valley Church in Wayne. They participated in Mass at the Wayne Valley High School before the present church was built.

Claire had an outgoing personality with a great sense of humor and greatly enjoyed being in the company of friends. She was a very strong woman, who fought hard to live a joyful life with her family after a debilitating illness struck her in 1998. She lived on to dance at her grandchildren’s weddings and celebrate the births of her great-grandchildren; none of which would have been possible without the unwavering dedication and love of her husband Bill.

She was predeceased by her sister Gladys Brown in 2010.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her husband William A. Ludwig; four sons Stephen Ludwig and his wife Susan of Wayne, William Ludwig and his wife Patricia of Wayne, David Ludwig and his wife Cindy of Franklin Lakes, Michael Ludwig and his wife Marilyn of Wayne. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren including Stephen Ludwig and his wife Sarah, Michael Ludwig and his wife Jennifer, and Katie Workman and her husband Gary; Alexis Ludwig and her fiancé Bill Moakley, and Billy Ludwig; Erin Schroeder and her husband Matthew, Kelly Hoffman and her husband Bill, and David Ludwig; Kimberly, Christina and Michael Ludwig, Eight great grandchildren including Marin, Luke, Stephen, Conner, Liam, and Griffin Ludwig, Alexa and Chase Workman.

Virginia “Ginny” Mullen, age 72 of Wayne, died on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at home with her family gathered at her bedside.

Ginny was born in Peoria, Illinois and moved to Polson, Montana at the age of six. She graduated from Polson High School and was named the “Future Farmers of America Queen”. She later moved with her family to Seattle. In the early 1960’s, she moved to Manhattan Beach, California, near Los Angeles. Ginny met her husband Warren there and they were married on April 2, 1966 at a chapel in Las Vegas. Warren wanted to get married on April Fool’s day, but Ginny wouldn’t have it. They enjoyed thirty six years together before Warren passed in 2002.

In 1976 Warren was transferred from California to New Jersey and they moved to Wayne. The plan was to return to California after three years, but they never left Packanack Lake. They enjoyed many family vacations to the west coast, visiting relatives. Ginny has family up and down the west coast, from California to Alaska, and her children recall many long road trips from New Jersey to visit those relatives. She’s been to Alaska, Oregon, Washington, as well as England, Europe, and Poland. More recently, she’s enjoyed some wonderful vacations with her girlfriends to Greece last year, and New Orleans just this past April. She liked being near the water and enjoyed a camping trip on the Colorado River as well as many vacations with her family and dear friends to Sacandaga Lake in Lake Pleasant, New York (where she was always in charge of the blueberry pancakes). She had also enjoyed vacationing on Nantucket Island and taking trips to Lake Tahoe to visit her son. Her favorite annual event was New Year’s Eve, enjoying a progressive dinner around Packanack with several families, and the men doing all the cooking.

Reading was Ginny’s defining passion. She also enjoyed many years volunteering at dance recitals for her daughter, and more recently for her grandchildren. She raised her daughter to dance and was also very proud to see her grandchildren taking dance lessons and performing in recitals too. She loved her grandchildren dearly and never missed a recital, or a baseball game for that matter.

Ginny is survived by her two children; Christa Cicchetti and her husband Bernard of Wayne, and David Mullen of Tahoe, California, her stepson; Michael Mullen of Gardenerville, Nevada, four grandchildren; Zachary, Jake and Keira Cicchetti of Wayne, and Cierra Mullen of Nevada, two sisters; Kathy Pallone and her husband Guy of Pompton Plains, Karen McClure and her husband Craig of Washington, three brothers; Lee Krause and his wife Tina of Sitka, Alaska, Volney Smith and his wife Linda of Sitka, Alaska, Viston Smith and his wife Susan of Oregon, and her stepmother; Evelyn Krause of Washington, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Warren in 2002, by her father Edwin Krause in 2010, her mother Olive Kis in 1993, and by her brother Dale Krause many years ago.

Matthew Bufardeci age 91, a fifty-six year resident of Wayne, died peacefully on Sunday, July 22, 2012.

He was born and raised in Paterson having attended Eastside High School and graduating from Paterson Technical High School.

After graduating from high school Matt got a job with the Leslie Company as a tool and die maker. After a few years he enlisted in the US Navy. Most of his service with the Navy was spent in Mayport, Florida where he was an engineman on a crash boat. There was a Navy Pilot Training Facility in Mayport and his boat was responsible for rescuing downed pilots. He received the WWII Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal for his service before being honorably discharged in 1946.

After his service Matt worked for the Eisen Metal Company in Lodi for several years before returning to the Leslie Company in Parsippany where he retired as a Tool Designer in 1985. After retiring, he assisted as a consultant to the company for several months when it relocated to Tampa, Florida.

Matt met his future wife, Jessie Nicoletti, through Jessie’s brother Jim. Matt attended Paterson Technical High School with Jim and they were friends. Matt and Jessie dated for several years and before Matt went off to the Navy, they became engaged. When he returned in 1946 they set the wedding date for September 29, 1946. They were married in St. Anthony’s Church in Paterson and honeymooned in Canada.

Matt was the devoted husband to Jessie Bufardeci (Nicoletti) and loving father of Linda DeFranco and her husband Roy of West Milford, and Andrea Sykes of West Long Branch; cherished grandfather of Roy DeFranco Jr., Matthew DeFranco and his wife Camille DeFranco, and Amanda Haring; loved brother of Frances Sunday of Prospect Park and the late Michael and Peter Bufardeci and Santa DelCucco.

Matt will be remembered as a kind, quiet, compassionate, family minded man. He had several hobbies including bowling, golf, gardening and watching the New York Yankees. One of the first people to own a video camera, Matt was also an avid amateur photographer taking hundreds of photos and movies of his family and especially his grandchildren. Matt and Jessie also enjoyed traveling. Throughout the years they accompanied their children and grandchildren on many family vacations to Cape Cod, the Jersey Shore, The Bahamas, Las Vegas and Florida. Later in life Matt and Jessie often accompanied Jessie’s brother Jim and his wife Marion on day trips to various local places and Atlantic City.

Matt had a good aptitude for making and fixing things and liked to tinker with just about anything. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His compassion and willingness to help others was a shining example for everyone. Matt was a founding parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley RC Church, Wayne.

Joseph J. Milarczyk age 87 of Wayne died peacefully on Sunday, July 22, 2012.

He was born in Harrisburg Pennsylvania and moved to Wayne when he was ten years old. He finished two years at Wayne High School, where he played baseball and football, and was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

Joe served as a Wayne Police Officer for thirty-eight years before retiring in 1985. When he first started their was a total of nine policeman working out of the old Police Station in the Mountainview section of the township.

He was liked by everyone, would help anyone, and had a crazy sense of humor. He loved the outdoors and in his younger years enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved his family and grandchildren unconditionally. He was an animal lover at heart having had a pony named Silver and a Saint Bernard, named Duchess. Joe didn’t like crowds and enjoyed getting away from it all while camping throughout the Midwest.

Joe and Irene met at the then Texaco gas station on top of French Hill. Their first date was to the drive in movies where Joe had free passes to the movie and they shared a hot dog. Joe and Irene fell in love and married at the Passaic Chapel with their reception at Donahue's in Wayne. The honeymooned in Florida after driving there because Joe never wanted to fly. They enjoyed sixty one years of a loving and devoted marriage.

He was the loving husband of Irene (Kahman) Milarczyk for 61 years ; loving father of William Milarczyk of Wayne, Susan Haggerty and her husband Michael of Vernon, and the late George Milarczyk (2004); cherished grandfather of five grandchildren: Kevin Haggerty, Glenn Milarczyk, Christoper Haggerty, Kelly Talerico and her husband Lenny Talerico, Tracey Milarczyk ; and proud Great-Grandfather of Tristan Joseph Talerico; loved brother of August Milarczyk of Florida, George Milarczyk of Scranton, PA, and the late John, Andrew, Josephine, Frank; and Trixie.

Richard Joseph Begley, age 71 of Stuart, Florida and formerly of Wayne.

Richard was born in Philadelphia. He lived there until he was eight years old when his family moved to Queens, New York. His father had been an engineer at the naval ship yards in Philadelphia and took a job with ConEd in New York at that time. Richard went on to graduate from LaSalle Academy in New York City with the class of 1959 and then earned his Bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University. He later earned his Master’s degree from Seton Hall University. He lived in Englewood, NJ until 1985 when he moved to Wayne, NJ. After his retirement in 1994, he moved to Stuart, Florida and returned to Beach haven, Long Beach Island in New Jersey for the summers.

After graduating from St. John’s University, Richard joined the Peace Corps and served in Tanzania. He helped with surveying, building roads and irrigation canals. He enjoyed two years in Tanzania and learned to speak Swahili. Upon his return to the United States, Richard began teaching in Englewood, NJ. He retired in 1994 after a career of nearly thirty years. He had taught social studies at the Dwight Morrow High School most of his years there.

In his earliest years teaching, Richard met one of the Englewood school nurses, Marie Farinella. The two of them met at a summer camp for underprivileged children. They hit it off right from the start and were married in 1968. They honeymooned in Puerto Rico and that trip became the last one that Richard was allowed to plan. They enjoyed many more vacations however, including camping trips to Silver Lake, Vermont, Canada, Colorado, and all over the United States. Richard liked the outdoors and a good camping trip always made him happy. He took a cruise on the Oasis just last year and was planning to return to Tanzania soon with some friends.

During his retirement, Richard loved his intellectual pursuits, such as reading, crossword puzzles, and he belonged to literary groups. His passion however, was golf. He played at least three times a week and was a member of the MGA (Mens Golf Association) in his Florida community. He enjoyed the game and all the great friends that he had the opportunity to play with.

Family was most important to Richard. He was a wonderful husband and father, but his favorite role was as a grandfather. He loved his grandchildren dearly and with his witty sense of humor he has surely given them all plenty to laugh about and many memories to cherish for their lifetimes. They will undoubtedly miss him dearly.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of forty four years; Marie of Stuart, Florida, three sons; Michael and his wife Erika of Wayne, Thomas and his wife Michele of Spring Hill, Tennessee, and David and his fiancé Colleen of St. Augustine, Florida, seven grandchildren; Patrick, Sean and Jack Begley of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Nicole and Michael of Wayne, and Emily and Matthew of St. Augustine, Florida, as well as one sister; Jean Sturtevant and her husband Robert of Yonkers, NY.

John A. Skaflestad, age 89, of Wayne, New Jersey, died Thursday, July 19, 2012.

John was born in Flora, Norway in 1923, and at the age of 5, came to the United States with his older brother Trygve and sister Gerda on the Oslofjord. The family settled in downtown Brooklyn, where mother Judith and father Christian managed a boarding house for Norwegian seamen. It was during this time that John's younger brother Ralph was born. Ever the pioneers, John's parents eventually purchased a tavern in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and named it the Leif Erickson. The tavern still exists today.

John graduated from Erasmus High School in Brooklyn in 1942, and soon enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a signalman aboard the mine sweeper USS Palmer in World War II. Incredibly, John survived two brutal, concurrent attacks at sea — the first when his ship was brought down by Kamikaze pilots in the Liguan Bay on the Pacific, leaving him lost at sea. When his rescue vessel was also bombed and sunk by Kamikaze, the sailor was stranded in the ocean a second time … yet was thankfully recovered. Upon his return home, John received the Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with 2 stars, as well as the Philippine Medal with 2 stars. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on February 25, 1946.

In 1953 John joined the New York City Police Department, and after serving two years as a patrolman, he was accepted to the NYPD Harbor Patrol, a particular dream of his. John loved his life honorably serving New York and sailing the Hudson until he retired from service in 1975. He eventually moved with his family to Wayne, New Jersey, where he lived for over 40 years. John spent the last several years residing in Stuart, Florida.

He was predeceased by his late wife Barbara (nee Pavleca) Skaflestad (May 4, 2012); and sister Gerda Tellefsen. He is survived and loved by his three children: Kristen Pacilio and husband Ronald of Charlotte, North Carolina; Stephen Skaflestad and wife Dorothy of Wall, and Jamie Longo and husband Anthony of Wayne. Cherished grandfather of Marleine Pacilio, Allison Fredricks and her husband Kevin, and Jonathan Pacilio; Dana Hafner and husband Steve of Pequannock, and Kara Skaflestad of Brooklyn, New York. Much loved great grandfather of Taylor and Michael Fredricks; Caroline Hafner. Loved brother of Trygve Skaflestad and his late wife Evelyn (July 6, 2012) of Toms River; Ralph Skaflestad and his wife Lorraine of Commack, Long Island, New York; and brother-in-law Sjur Tellefsen of Fayson Lakes.

John will be remembered as a kind and loyal man with an extraordinary sense of humor, and for his remarkable pride in both his country and Norwegian heritage.

Warren “Jerry” Sims age 88 of Wayne died Monday, July 16, 2012.

He was born and raised in Bronx New York and was drafted into the US Army towards the end of WWII. He served in the Army for eight years having been to Italy, Okinawa, Japan, and the Philippines. He served in the infantry and later with the Military Police.

When he was discharged from the military he got work at the Continental Can Company in Jersey City. It was during his work at Continental Can that he met his wife Angela Baffuto at Kajewskis in Secaucus. They fell in love and married on May 22, 1960 at St. Joseph’s RC Church in Union City and honeymooned in Florida. They made the cutest Irish/Italian couple. Jerry and Angela’s home was always busy as she was one of ten children, lived on the same block as three of her sisters and one sister-in-law, and their house always seemed to be the gathering point. Thursday and Sunday family dinners were a welcome staple. They enjoyed forty-four years of a loving and caring marriage before Angela’s passing in 2004.

After his work at Continental Can Jerry found work as a Teamster truck driver for Ward Trucking based in Little Falls. He worked there for over twenty years before retiring in 1990.

Jerry enjoyed his lottery tickets and photography. He was always taking pictures at family gatherings. He would take forever to focus and adjust the camera settings and by the time he took the picture his subjects often had a malcontent look upon their faces. He would mail copies to his subjects, which were often blurry or misaligned in the later years. Jerry would get annoyed if you didn’t thank him for them but really appreciated when you did! Although he has not traveled lately, he did enjoy family vacations which he & Angela insisted upon even if things were a little tight. Jerry's love of adventure may have been passed onto his daughter, Kathy and her family! Jerry & Angela also loved going to Atlantic City.

He was the loving husband of the late Angela Sims (2004); devoted father of Kathleen and her husband Paul Savastano of Wayne, cherished grandfather of Alexis and Danielle Savastano; loved brother-in-law of Geraldine Caliguire of Bridgewater, Agnes Baffuto of North Bergen and brother Leonard Howell and his wife Eileen of Dover Delaware. He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

Richard A. Pignone, age 81 of Lincoln Park, died on Monday, July 9, 2012.

Richard grew up in the Riverside section of Paterson, during an era when the city was quite a bit different than it is today. He was raised in a great Italian neighborhood where everyone seemed to know each other. He had a lot of fun, perhaps a little too much fun. With a habit of finding mischief and an early dislike for school, Richard’s father thought it best that his son get a job.

Richards father, Pat, was a member of the Teamsters Local 560. He starting bringing his son to work and everyone there began referring to him as “Little Pat” right from the start. The name stuck and to this day many of his co-workers only know him as “Pat”. He’s been a member of the Teamsters Local 560 himself since 1962, primarily as a truck driver.

Richard started out driving trucks for Black Millwork and then took a job with Glen Rock Lumber in Fair Lawn. He worked for Glen Rock more than forty years. He started his career as a truck driver and moved into a dispatcher role later in his career. His family threw him a wonderful, huge retirement party to celebrate his lengthy career. But he didn’t quite want to retire and the very next day he went back to Glen Rock Lumber and kept right on working! He loved his job and all the great people he worked with.

Richard met his wife Charlotte quite literally on the corner in Paterson one day. He saw a few girls hanging out and asked if anyone had a quarter because he had blown a fuse in his car and needed a quarter to get it started. Charlotte tossed him a quarter and to show his appreciation he offered her a ride in his car. They fell for each other pretty quickly and they were married on July 2, 1950 at Our Lady of Lord’s in Paterson. They tried to enjoy a honeymoon in Niagara Falls, but Charlotte got homesick so Richard drove her all the way back home to her mother. They were soul mates nonetheless, and have enjoyed sixty two years of loving marriage together. He did everything for her, was a wonderful provider, and did whatever he had to including working three jobs at one point so that she would not have to take a job and work.

In 1953, Richard was drafted and he served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a small arms repairman and also drove trucks. He enjoyed his time in the service, but missed his wife during the time he was away. He was discharge in 1955 and has been a member of the American Legion, Post 279 in Lincoln Park for many years.

Richard enjoyed boating and spent many days and weekends on Lake Hopatcong. He loved to simply go out in the boat and hangout, go swimming, and occasionally enjoy a cocktail at the Windlass or O’Sullivans. His family has some wonderful memories with Richard on their boat. He also enjoyed going to Little Italy in New York City for Father’s Day every year. His daughter Vicki made sure that was always a special day for him. He also loved just sitting outside in his yard with his wife.

Richard is survived by his wife of sixty two years; Charlotte of Lincoln Park, and his daughter Vicki Pignone and her husband Vinnie Mascelli of Lincoln Park. He was predeceased by his son Ricky in 1953.

Patricia V. Watson “Pat” (nee Roche) age 79 of Packanack Lake area in Wayne passed into life eternal on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at home. Her passing was quiet and peaceful while receiving the love of her family who were at her bedside.

She was born in Queens, New York and had lived there as well as Manhattan and the Bronx . Pat also enjoyed summers as a young girl with her Aunt Charlotte and Uncle Jack at their cottage in Lake Walkill, N.J.

Pat received her formal education at Saint Simon Stock School in the Bronx and graduated from high school with the Class of 1950.

She met James Watson Jr. at a social gathering and they soon fell in love. They married on September 15, 1953. They had three sons together. Tragedy impacted their marriage when Jim, traveling to work in New York City by bus, was stricken with a heart attack and died at the age of forty.

They had three sons who were ages three to ten years at his passing. She set out to raise those boys by herself with dedication, and the help of friends and family, into their adult years.

Pat was gifted with a regal personality that caused others to admire and enjoy her presence. Her natural ways made her a very loving mother, friend, and an admired and respected colleague at work. It would be truthful to describe her demeanor as being a sophisticated, well organized professional.

She was predeceased by her husband James Watson Jr. in 1967 and her only sister Eugenia DelColle in 2011. After the untimely death of her husband Pat returned to work as the school librarian at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Wayne and later as a confidential secretary for the Wayne Board of Education. She finally retired from work in 1999.

Surviving to mourn the loss of her presence in their lives are three sons, Brian Watson and his wife Jo-Ann of Weehawken, Timothy Watson of Wayne, and Christopher Watson and his wife Kathryn of Tinton Falls.

Catherine Romanski, age 78 of Wayne, died after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, July 7, 2012.

Her children will tell you that she was the best of the best mother in the whole world. She will be remembered for her strength of character and determination. She was a devoted and dedicated mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and grandmother.

Born in Jersey City, Catherine was actually born and known to her family as “Sondra” and grew up in Bayonne, NJ. The little girl with two first names was always dressed in pink and early in her life earned a nickname that stuck with her, and is still affectionately used by her husband and brother. She enjoyed a childhood rich in Polish Catholic heritage and tradition. Her grandparents lived upstairs from her and spoke Polish around the house and her father operated a wholesale floral business. His enterprise was successful and as a young lady, Catherine enjoyed such luxuries as a telephone in her own home. She graduated from St. Dominic Academy in 1950 and was awarded two scholarships to college. However, her father was very ill at the time and she didn’t feel comfortable leaving her family to go to school full time, and instead got a job as at a New York bank and then Colgate-Palmolive to help out with family expenses. College would have to wait. After working her day job, she would come home at night and work at the family business, making and delivering floral arrangements in addition to managing the bills and accounts. She was no stranger to hard work and long hours.

Catherine met her husband Frank while they were both members of the Catholic Youth Organization. Their first date was when Frank asked her to play tennis one day and ‘love’ was truly part of the game that day. They really hit it off and rather than part ways, decided to take a walk over the Bayonne Bridge with the thought of taking the ferry from Staten Island back to Bayonne. They missed that last ferry and had to walk back over the bridge, exhausted. Frank finally brought her home after 3:00 a.m. They saw each other nearly every day after that, enjoying many dates and outings. One particular outing was to Jones Beach, NY, which turned into another very late night, as they trains had stopped running and they mistakenly thought that the bus that could have gotten them home was going to a different location, called “Garage” (not realizing “Garage” meant it was making its last loop for the night)! They finally arrived at Catherine’s doorstop a little after 4 am this time, to a strongly-worded greeting from Catherine’s mom. Their love was strong and Frank soon proposed. They were married on August 27, 1955 and their honeymoon proved to be rather memorable in some unexpected ways. Their car was broken into and all their luggage and jewelry stolen. The police asked Frank to leave the car right where it was so that they could come back in the daylight the following day and do a thorough investigation. Frank woke up to find a parking ticket on the car. They eventually made it to Cape Cod (four flat tires along the way), arriving on the same day as a major hurricane. Upon returning to Bayonne, they discovered that their wedding photographer’s studio had burned to the ground, along with all of their wedding photos. All was not completely lost, however, when the photographer discovered one roll of film that he inadvertently left in his jacket pocket when he went home that night. Some photo’s had indeed survived. Nonetheless, Catherine and Frank realized that if they could endure all of this in just the first few days of their marriage, they could survive anything. They would have celebrated fifty seven years together next month.

In 1963 they settled in Wayne and raised their seven children. Catherine became active with all the children’s activities, sports, music lessons, dance and more. She became a Cub Scout Den Mother and Frank was an assistant Scoutmaster and their son Frank became an Eagle Scout. Catherine also served as a CCD teacher for nearly twenty years and was very active at the Our Lady of the Valley parish. She was president of the Women’s Club, served as a Eucharistic Minister, cleaned and pressed the church linens and also chaired meals for the elderly and sick for many, many years. She was also a substitute secretary and aide with the Wayne Schools.

At sixty-eight years old, with seven grown children and twelve grandchildren, Catherine decided that her college plans had waited long enough. She enrolled as a full-time student at William Paterson University and after ten determined years, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting at the age of seventy-two, with a combined GPA of 3.4. It was a long awaited accomplishment for her and she received overwhelming applause and a standing ovation during the commencement ceremony in 2006. Her story was even featured on the front page of the local newspapers at the time. A humble woman who initially had not even planned on attending the ceremony, she was taken aback when she would be approached by women in the local grocery store or shopping mall and they would share with her that they had heard about, or read her story, and that she had inspired them to also return to college.

Catherine is survived by her loving and devoted husband Frank of Wayne, seven children: Frank Romanski and his wife Audrey of Kinnelon, NJ, James Romanski and his wife Patricia of Gilford, CT, Gerard Romanski of Wayne, Dr. Lizbeth Romanski and her husband Dr. David Kornack of Rochester, NY, Mark Romanski and his wife Paula of Florham Park, NJ, Joyce Romanski-Daley and her husband Robert Daley of Yardley, PA, and Barbara Bogley and her husband Jamie of Middletown, MD; fourteen grandchildren: Frank, Danielle, and Stephanie Romanski of Kinnelon, NJ, Sydney and Nicholas of Guilford, CT, Keith and Julie Romanski of Wayne, NJ, Emily Kornack of Rochester, NY, Allison and Laura of Florham Park, NJ, Cassandra and Jessica Daley of Yardley, PA and Abigail and Grady Bogley of Middletown, MD. She is also survived by her brother Dr. Frank Pilkiewicz and his wife Carolyn of Princeton Junction, NJ. She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Kirk of Bayonne, NJ in 2004, and previously by her parents, Frank and Catherine Pilkiewicz of Bayonne.

In addition to her love of flowers, which she nurtured by growing flowering plants, bushes and gardens around her home, Catherine especially enjoyed family gatherings and celebrating holidays with all of her family surrounding her at the family home. For decades she hosted Christmas Eve and Thanksgiving dinners for 30-plus people (merely her immediate family), and creating ribbons of memory for her children and grandchildren that are part of the fabric of their lives and the strong sense of family-unity that she imparted to them.

Jean May Kline, (nee Onderdonk), age 77 of Oak Ridge, went home to the Lord on Friday, July 6, 2012 at the St. Clare’s Hospital in Dover. She had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1964.

Jean was born and grew up in the Mountain View section of Wayne. She began her career with Mack Molding in Wayne and loved working there for thirty five years, at which point the company moved from the area. She then began working at Viva International and stayed there for nine years before retiring in 1999.

Jean was a very athletic woman and was always involved in sports. She played softball for many years, was a great bowler, did a lot of walking and was generally very active. Around the house, she never seemed to stop cleaning! Maintaining a clean home was very important to her and you knew it if you ever visited. In fact, her family recalls vacations to the Outer Banks where they would all spend the first day of vacation cleaning their rented home with Aunt Jean. They would vacuum, wash all the windows, clean the kitchen and bathrooms all on the first day of vacation, and then do it all again on the last day, leaving the home impeccably spotless for the next renters. She loved her vacations to the Outer Banks, with all of her family gathered together. She was a bit of a ham and loved to perform in the family skits they would put on during vacation. She has blessed her family with so many cherished memories, most of which make them all laugh, including the time she ran over her seven-year-old niece with a bicycle, by accident, of course. Aunt Jean was like the glue that bonded their family together. She was very loving, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good prank from time to time. She was well liked by the wild animals of the Outer Banks too, as feeding them all was one of her favorite pastimes when they vacationed there. The local fox would enjoy a plate of chicken and the turtles were sure to get their fill of crackers whenever Aunt Jean was in town. At home she always had a pet cat and she became very attached to her hamsters. It all began with “Bubba.” She had a big heart and loved all animals.

Jean was active with the Grace Evangelical Free Church of Oak Ridge and her faith in Jesus was the pillar of her life. She devoted her time to the children’s church, the Bible school, and the White Cross Ministry Missions program.

Jean met her husband Kenneth while working at Mack Molding in Wayne. On one particular day in 1955, they saw each other while ice skating on the pond near to where William Paterson University is now. It was Jean’s intention to skate into Ken and knock him down, in order make his acquaintance, but that wasn’t necessary in the end. Skating on the pond that day became their first date and after Ken was discharged from the Marine Corps, they married on July 29, 1960. They enjoyed a wonderful honeymoon at Niagara Falls and were blessed with nearly fifty two years of a loving, amazing, and perfect marriage. For their fiftieth anniversary celebration, Jean chose a Biblical verse from Song of Songs 3:4; “I found the one my heart loves”, and that says it all about how they felt towards one another.

Jean is survived by her beloved husband Kenneth of Oak Ridge, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two sisters; Millie Shaw in 1984 and Margie Ballard in 1995, as well as her brother Herbert Hoover Onderdonk in 2005.

Theresa Ann O’Dell (nee Sauter), age 59 of Oak Ridge, died suddenly on Thursday, July 5, 2012. She was an R.N. at St. Claire’s Hospital in Dover.

She graduated from Pope John XIII High School, Sparta, with the class of 1970. She worked at American Cyanamid in Wayne before moving to Los Angeles in 1975. She had worked for Southern California Edison in Los Angeles for nearly twenty years before returning to Oak Ridge, NJ in 1995. Theresa was a dedicated nurse at St. Claire’s in Dover and loved her patients. She was always joyful and generous to a fault.

Theresa is survived by her son Sean O’Dell of Oak Ridge, her sister Patricia Ohlendorf and her husband Bruce of East Brunswick, two brothers; James Sauter and his wife Ligia of Oak Ridge, and David Sauter and his wife Judy of Oak Ridge, as well as her dear cousin Marion Doyle of Queens, NY.

Jennie S. Kuss (neé Szczech) age 94 of Wayne died Tuesday, July 3, 2012 with her loving family at her bedside.

She was born in Passaic and spent her formative years on her family’s dairy farm located in Belle Meade. She received her formal education at Belle Meade grammar school and her high school education at Somerville High School graduating with the Class of 1935.

The great depression was in full swing in 1935 and she found jobs continually to help support her family. Jennie did house cleaning and whatever was available including secretarial work. At some point in time she went back to Passaic and found work at Bendix Aviation as a stater winder for over thirty years before retiring in 1980.

She was responsible for many of the motor parts used in the Appollo space program.

Her finest dedication in life was as a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. When the tragedy of losing her husband in October 1983 took place she rededicated her love and energy to her family.

She met Joseph Kuss through a cousin. He was the only family member with a car and provided transportation for everyone in the family. He went off to war and came home and immediately proposed marriage to Jennie. They had one date to a movie and then married. The final result was that they had a good and loving marriage together for 38 years before his passing in October of 1983.

Jennie was gifted with a very social personality, perhaps a natural social butterfly and enjoyed the presence of many friends. She was a member of the Golden Age Circle in Wayne, the Bendix Retirees, the VFW of Wallington Ladies Auxilary. Jennie also enjoyed travel; often travelling with her sister, Mary Ann Emmons, around the country.

Surviving to mourn this very special lady in their lives are one daughter Tina Walsh and her husband Edward of Wayne; grandchildren including Edward Walsh, Ian Walsh and his wife Jeannine; great-grandchildren Liam and Keira Walsh.

Emily Elizabeth Schank (nee Esser), age 89 of Oak Ridge and Green Pond, was called home to the Lord on Tuesday, July 3, 2012.

Emily was born in New York City and moved to Edgewater, New Jersey at the age of two. She had also lived in River Edge and Oradell before moving to Green Pond in 1965.

Emily’s sons recall growing up in River Edge and Oradell, and that there was no gym class offered at their parochial elementary school. Emily met with the priest of the school to discuss starting a gym class and before they knew it, Emily was their new gym teacher! She enjoyed teaching the kids and working with them, although her true motivation may have been to keep a closer eye on her own two sons. She later worked at her son’s middle and high schools as a cafeteria cook and aid. She never stopped caring for her boys and even at the age of sixty eight she gladly underwent surgery in order to donate a kidney to her son Ray. She was a terrific mom.

She and her husband Bill (2007) were never ones to sit still and always had something exciting going on. In the late 1940’s, they built a bungalow on Notch Road in Green Pond. The bungalow was actually an old Army barracks that Bill had purchased for $50. He took it apart and transported the pieces to Green Pond, where the whole family helped put it back together again – their first summer home! She was hands-on through it all, mixing cement and working right alongside of Bill. They all learned to water ski at Green Pond, and it wasn’t uncommon for Emily to spend a few hours a day out on the water teaching her kids how to ski. The whole family learned to sail as well, and Emily and Bill enjoyed racing their Comet every weekend with the Green Pond Yacht Club. By 1965, they were ready to live at Green Pond year-round, and they bought a house right on the lake. When Emily thought that snow skiing might be fun for the family, she bought a book to learn how. She made all the necessary garments for her family, sewing them from scratch, including their parkas, and they drove up to Belleayre in New York State to give it a try. Emily was certainly an excellent seamstress and made most of her own clothing from a very young age. When she wanted to reupholster her own furniture at home, she took a job at a Rockaway upholstery shop and learned the craft. Once she was confident enough, she did her own furniture and it looked terrific. Emily also worked for the Taggarts Driving School as an instructor, and her sons recall how cool it was that their mom was teaching people how to drive with Ford Mustang cars. She served as a nursing home aid in Wayne for a number of years and later drew on those experiences as she cared for both of her parents and Bill’s parents during the autumn of their lives.

When grandchildren came along, Emily and Bill got their pilot license so they could visit Michigan more easily and frequently. Emily received her pilot license at the age of 50 and shortly thereafter started taking aerobatic lessons – learning to do tricks with the plane. Her family was grateful that she didn’t pursue more than just a few lessons. None the less, she and Bill traveled frequently with their plane, and made trips all over North America, including Canada and the Bahamas. They visited with their grandchildren in Michigan and often brought the kids back to Green Pond for a few weeks each summer.

In 1995, they bought a camper and would travel to Chokoloskee Island, Florida where they would spend about three months each winter. Chokoloskee Island is a fishing hamlet in the far south of the Florida Everglades where, over the years, she and Bill made some wonderful, dear friends from all over the country and Canada. She continued to go there even after Bill passed in 2007 and loved her time there. She will surely be missed when the conch shell is blown, signaling the start of cocktail hour. Perhaps they’ll all have a toast in her honor on Chokoloskee.

Emily is survived by her two sons; William Schank, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Howell, Michigan, Ray Schank and his girlfriend Kathy of Oak Ridge, NJ, four grandchildren; Karen Schank of Medford, Oregon, Jennifer Smith and her husband Burck of Baltimore, Maryland, Dan Schank and his wife Jenny of Sacramento, California, and Stephen Schank of California, four great-grandchildren; Zachary, Quinlan, and Sawyer Smith, all of Baltimore, and Madeleine Emily Schank of Sacramento, and one brother; George Esser and his wife Rosemary of Tenafly, NJ.

Dorothy M. Forte (nee Mohan) of Wayne died on Tuesday, July 3, 2012. She had been a Wayne resident since 1965.

She was raised in the St. Vincent Ferrer Parish of New York’s Upper East Side and had been a parishioner of Our Lady of the Valley RC Church in Wayne since 1965. She was past president of the Passaic County League of Women Voters and the National Organization for Women (NOW). She was a staunch advocate for equal rights her entire life.

Dorothy and her husband Mario (2006) were devoted to each other, raising their six children together and traveling all over the world during their fifty one years of marriage.

Dorothy is survived by her children; Thomas Forte and his wife Maritza of North Hanover, NJ, Claire Forte-McRobbie and her husband James of Somerset, NJ, Ralph Forte and his wife Juliet of River Edge, NJ, Dhyana Forte of Wayne, NJ, Honoria Forte and her husband Ed Morley of Glen Rock, NJ, and Dominique Forte and her husband Lascelles Geddes of Parsippany, NJ, and twelve grandchildren.

Robert Van Wageninge, age 59 of Wayne, died unexpectedly on Monday, July 2, 2012.

Bob was a school teacher in Basking Ridge, NJ before retiring just one year ago.  He also conducted the school band for several years.

Bob is survived by one cousin; Marilyn "Joy" Cotton of California and was predeceased by his sister June just two months ago on May 1, 2012.

George “Mark” Markley Morris III age 43 of Butler and Wayne died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, July 2, 2012 at the Holy Name Hospital in Engelwood.

He was born in Glen Ridge and lived in Nutley, Bloomfield, Wayne for many years before moving to Butler two years ago.

Mark graduated from the Cushing Academy in Ashburnham Massachusetts with the Class of 1986 and attended Curry College in Milton Massachusetts.

His work history includes Pier 1 Imports in Wayne, Toys R Us in Totowa, the Box Die Corporation Jersey City/Lodi for many years having most recently worked for the Unity Steel Corporation in Englewood since November of 2011.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion in Lincoln Park who are scheduled to have a service 7 PM on Friday evening.

Mark will be remembered as a gentle giant, could make anyone laugh, had a huge heart, and never had a bad word to say about anyone.

George Mark Morris III warmly known by his loved ones as "Mark, BIG Mark, Markley, or GMMIII". Mark was the kindest, gentlest human that we all had the honor of knowing. Whether he was playing World Dom or Xbox with people from all over the globe or just hanging with friends his funny kind hearted spirit that was so full of wit would shine through in an instant. He was a good son, a wonderful friend, and a loving boyfriend and stepdad who was always there to share a laugh, a thought, a hug, a smile. He left this world and all of us too soon, leaving behind a legacy of love and friendship that can never be replaced. Mark YOU are our angel in heaven watching over us... Thanks DUDE! Forever in our Hearts, you will live on.... till we meet again!

He was the loving son of George and Gloria June Morris; devoted boyfriend of Catherine Grant of Butler and her daughter Beth whom Mark loved very much; loved Godfather of Dane Turner and dear uncle of Zackary Turner; he was also loved very much by aunts, uncles and many cousins in Mississippi; he will be truly missed by his many friends.

Anthony J. Manno age 83 of Clifton, Wayne, and Rockaway, NJ passed away on July 1, 2012 at home shortly after his entire family visited at his bedside. Anthony appeared comforted while his family was reminiscing about the loving ways he gave of himself. He passed away peacefully with his wife Anita at his side.

He was born and raised in Clifton, NJ. He graduated from Clifton High School in 1945. During high school, he was active in various sports including baseball, football, boxing and track. In 1961, he moved his family to Wayne, NJ where he spent the majority of his life raising his family. After retirement, Anthony and Anita needed a home that required much less maintenance. As a result, they moved to Rockaway, NJ in 2003.

When Anthony was 22 years old, his sweet tooth took him into a Clifton candy store named Jay’s a few blocks from his house. That visit turned out to be a wonderful experience because he met a beautiful girl by the name of Anita Faillace. After three years of courtship, they married at St. Brendan’s church in Clifton, NJ on September 17, 1950 and they enjoyed 61 years of a loving and devoted marriage together. Anita was so devoted to Anthony that she cared for him at home during his long years of struggle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Anthony possessed an innate personal ambition and confidence which allowed him to strive to achieve excellence in everything he did. He worked hard his entire life including when he was young which started with juggling multiple paper routes. Anthony saw that his immigrant father had to work under harsh conditions in order to support his family and wanted to do better for himself. Therefore, he decided to further his education by studying mechanical engineering at Newark College of Engineering (now called New Jersey Institute of Technology). However, his tremendous love for his future wife overpowered his need to continue his college studies as the need to provide for his new wife took precedence. He decided to use his background in mechanical engineering and his artistic ability to get a job as a draftsman, but he did not have any experience. During an interview with the Forstman Corporation, he offered them a deal that they could not refuse. He would work free for a trial period with the understanding that if they were satisfied with his work, they would offer him a permanent position. He did so well that they hired him and he worked there until he changed to a company where he would stay for his entire professional career, Wallace and Tiernan in Belleville, NJ. As he did with everything, he became an expert in drafting and design. As a result, he became his group’s supervisor and then the manager of his department and his group’s related departments. He stayed at Wallace and Tiernan, which became a subsidiary of Penwalt Corporation, for forty plus years until his retirement in 1992.

Anthony had many talents and skills in addition to his natural leadership ability. He enjoyed many creative activities such as painting, carpentry, and woodworking, which he used to build furniture, birdhouses, and toys for his grandchildren. As an artist, he worked in oils and occasionally in watercolors, specializing in outdoor scenery. Cooking was a passion enjoyed by all who have tasted his barbecue lemon chicken, homemade sausage, Arrangina (meat stuffed rice balls), and stuffed eggplant.

His children can recall having gotten A’s on long-term Science projects with the artistic help of their dad. Dancing with his children and grandchildren whenever there was music brought life to any party. In fact, his motto was to enjoy life because every day was important. His days were filled with activities, projects and helping anyone who was in needed including family, friends, and the church. His laugh was loud and strong as he exuded passion for life. He loved to play with his children and grandkids like rolling on the floor tickling or playing rough house, which brought a level of excitement to the home. It was rarely quiet! When he greeted his granddaughter Kim with a strong grab on the face and a big kiss on each cheek, she explains his love for her felt limitless. He had a way of making his family feel loved and special by his actions. Examples are the aches and pains soothed by olive oil massage therapy (he had the strongest fingers), nursing his wife and children when they were sick, and caring for the house by adding rooms, or gardens, or just lifting a mop. He was not happy unless he was always doing something.

His grandsons fondly remember receiving his loving haircuts when they were young. He taught them how to work with hand and power tools by spending summer days gardening, manicuring the lawn and trimming trees. On one particular trip to Long Beach Island, he taught them how to catch crabs. They thoroughly enjoyed all the stories he would tell about his escapades from his youth playing baseball, boxing and football. His backyard shed was filled with baseballs and gloves. He often enjoyed playing ball with them. When the holidays rolled around, the boys enjoyed putting up his Christmas tree. It was big and bright and he had a meticulous way of assembling all the decorations. When his youngest grandson Amir was born, 10 years after his older brothers, the yard had been turned into an oasis including such things as a gazebo, fish pond and waterfall. Amir enjoyed watching his grandfather care for the pond, and he would let him feed the fish. He taught his grandsons tips on how to draw and when Anthony and Anita moved to Rockaway, they enjoyed playing bocce and shuffleboard with him.

He was extremely generous with his time and talents with a long list of kind deeds. Examples include: taking Anita’s aunt, who was wheelchair bound with polio, to where she could sing as an amateur, bringing Anita fruit at her job (when they were courting) because her family could not afford much, helping others with projects such as building additions, designing blueprints for additions or houses, carpentry work, and volunteering to drive patients to a local hospital so that they could get the care they need.

Anthony was also very devoted to his Roman Catholic faith. He was extremely active in Our Lady of The Valley Church in Wayne. He volunteered in many activities including lector, usher, and managing Bingo. He also applied his professional skills at the church by helping plan and build a beautiful Grotto next to the church’s rectory.

Anthony was very devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children, which has helped them become successful today. He believed that no job was too difficult. He had the confidence to tackle any challenge. His belief that perseverance is a cornerstone of life was evident when he continued to lead an active and full life even when illness was draining his strength over the last seven years. The love, wisdom and care that he gave his family will be dearly missed.

Anthony leaves to mourn his passing and to cherish his loving memory, his beloved wife Anita (nee) Manno; two daughters Diane and Theresa and her husband Kays; two sons John and his wife Debra and Anthony, six grandchildren Kimberly, Lori, Julie, Omar, Adam and Amir. Amelia De Lauro, 94, of Pompton Plains passed away June 29, 2012. Beloved wife of the late Albert De Lauro. Loving mother of Albert A. De Lauro of San Antonio, TX and Mark De Lauro of Franklin Lakes, and their respective spouses Claire and Elizabeth. She is survived by her dear sister in law, Mary Brotons and many beloved nephews and nieces. Mrs. De Lauro was a language educator and department chair of the Paramus High School Foreign Language Dept. where she also was a resident for many years. She will be fondly remembered by her students and colleagues. She held her B.A. from NYU and her Masters in Education from Montclair State University.

Betty Jane Mazzie (nee Turton), age 81 of Wayne died on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the Atrium in Wayne.

Betty grew up in Kearny and graduated from Kearny High School in 1948. It was at Kearny High School that she met Donald Mazzie who would become her husband. Don joined the Navy and after his discharge, they were married in 1952. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls and returned there several times with their kids. They traveled all over the U.S. with their RV, visiting parks, family and friends. Together, they enjoyed forty six years of a devoted marriage before Don passed in 1998.

In 1962, Betty and Don moved to Wayne where they raised their five children and a host of pets. Betty and Don loved animals and were active with their children in the 4H. Besides the usual chickens, ducks, and dogs, Don surprised them all when he brought home a monkey one day! Betty wasn’t particularly fond of the monkey and, after it escaped one day and she had to climb an apple tree to get it back, she told Don it had to go to a zoo. Her house and the great big yard that they had, was the ‘hub’ where her kids and all the neighborhood kids seemed to gather. Her household had no shortage of stories and memorable events, including one particular archery incident involving Betty. She was grateful that day to have Dr. Schlossberg right across the street. Betty was a dedicated mother and worked full-time raising her five children.

Betty enjoyed square dancing and she would go every Thursday night with Don. She liked to have some of her ‘me’ time also, which included bowling with the league at T-bowl and in Oakland. She also enjoyed summer vacations with her family, renting a bungalow in Neptune and spending the whole summer there.

Betty is survived by her five children: Carl Mazzie and his wife Debbie of Wayne, Donna Mazzie of Paterson, Candice Manasse of Phoenix, Arizona, Duke Mazzie of Wayne, and Walter Mazzie of Wayne, twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Don in 1998 and by her sister Nancy Ann Gangwisch of Surprise, Arizona in 2012.

Helen Marie Reitz age 84 of Wayne died on Tuesday June 26, 2012 while receiving the loving care of her family.

Helen was born and raised in Bronx, NY then moved to Wayne and lived there nearly all of her life. She was a homemaker for most of her life journey; however she took a job babysitting for the last 10 to 15 years which she truly enjoyed. Helen was a long time parishioner of our Lady of Consolation Church in Wayne and was very devoted to her Catholic Faith.

She was a very devoted Mother and Grandmother. Besides her love and devotion to her family, Helen enjoyed cooking, baking, and shopping. She also enjoyed her bus trips to Atlantic City. Her family remembers her as being the kind of person that would “open her door to anyone.” If you were a friend of Helen’s family, she took you in as her own, no questions asked. Helen was a loving and caring person that will surely be missed by her friends and family alike.

Helen is survived by her two sons Robert Reitz and his wife Agnes of Chatham; and Bill Reitz and his wife Jody of Bloomfield, CO; her three daughters Sue McGill and her husband Bernie of Pompton Plains; Carol Lehman and her husband Don of Colorado; and Kathy Nomura and her husband Mike of Fountain Valley, CA; four grandchildren Stephen, Brianna, Kaz, and James.

Doris Mae Abbott, of Wayne, New Jersey passed into the Lord’s hands Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital while surrounded by her loving family.

Born in 1931, one of Loretta and Edward Coyle’s three children, Doris was raised and educated in Elmwood Park, NJ. Doris married the love of her life in 1950, Herbert John Abbott. She and Herb met while working at White and Shauger. It was love at first sight for Herb and being a man who followed his heart’s desire he wooed and pursued Doris in a marriage that spanned 61 years of devoted love and she remained his “one and only”.

Doris and her sister Jeanne would shop for houses in the early months of their marriage, placing the requisite $5.00 deposit with a builder while their husbands were at work. This went on until finally settling on two lovely little capes on Court Street not far from the family homestead. There they raised their children as one big extended family. In 1969 the family moved to Wayne, officially establishing “Coyle Court” where four homes went up for the families of Doris, her parents, sister and brother! For Doris it was always about family, and that never changed.

Doris enjoyed her family and making their home beautiful and comfortable for all who passed through her door. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and especially looked forward to visits from her children and grandchildren. She was known for her excellent culinary skills and ability to make all feel like her home was their home. She was always ready to welcome and entertain all who arrived and equally ready to walk out the door at a moment’s notice for an adventure.

She and Herb were of one heart. They enjoyed travel, dining and dancing. They laughed together on a daily basis, keeping a faithful following of the British sitcoms and of late, tuning in to “Dancing with the Stars”. Herb was always at Doris’s side and once again she has joined him. Doris and Herb shared an abiding faith in the Lord and are joined together again in God’s eternal embrace.

Doris is predeceased by Herb, her beloved husband and daughter Lauren Abbott. She is survived by her cherished children Dr. Herbert R. Abbott and his wife Stella Lombardo of Slingerlands, NY, Wendy Johnson of Wayne, NJ, Donna Abbott of Lincoln Park, NJ and Karen Joyce and her husband Tom of Auburn, NH, and grandchildren Christopher, Shannon, Dana, Nicholas, Emily, Michele, Melanie and Rebecca. She is also survived by Jeanne Wache, Edward Ryan and Sandy Coyle, Josephine Abbott, Lucy Abbott and their families. Doris will be dearly missed by all whose hearts she touched.

Thomas W. Tanski age 69 of North Haledon passed into life eternal on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the Bergen County Health Care Center in Rockleigh. His passing was quiet and peaceful after a six year long battle with his health.

He was born in Paterson and lived his childhood years in Haledon and Prospect Park. Tom received his formal education at Prospect Park Grammar School and Paterson Technical High School where he majored in Building Trades.

Tom was a self employed general contractor building houses and industrial buildings for many years finally retiring in 2008.

He had built into his persona hard work and many skills related to the building trade.

He was gifted with a kind and outgoing personality that loved to be with people. As a result he developed over the years a host of friends.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 0259 in Oneonta, New York, the Ridgefield Elks Lodge 1506, Moose International, Silentia Masonic Lodge No. 168 in Butler, the Veteans Club in Haledon, the Six Ward Athletic Club of Oneonta, New York and Hawthorne Fortitude Masonic Lodge 200 of Ramsey. Tom served twice as Master of Hawthorne Fortitude Masonic Lodge 200 in Ramsey.

Survivors include one son Thomas Tanski and his wife Stacey of Hawthorne; one daughter Tracey Werner and her husband David of Wyckoff; his sister Eileen Ormezzano of North Haledon; one brother Henry Tanski of Wayne nieces and nephews including Debra Paskowski, James Ormezzano, Patrick Tanski, Robert Ormezzano and Kimberly Mascelli.

Joseph Peter Staluppi, age 81 of Wayne, died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. He has lived in Wayne since 1964.

Joe grew up in Fairview, New Jersey and his father was a musician. Joe’s dad played the French Horn with show orchestras on Broadway and he also played in the Barnum & Bailey Circus band, which caused them to travel a bit. Joe was an excellent student however, and he excelled at mathematics. After graduating from Emerson High School, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering in 1952 and then his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1961.

Joe began his career with ITT in Clifton where he worked with the team that developed sonar technology for minesweeper ships during the Korean War era. Without a doubt, his work helped save hundreds of lives. He began working with Bendix in 1967 where he was on the team that designed and developed the range rate indicator for the NASA Apollo 11 mission. This instrument gave Neil Armstrong the range and rate of closure as they approached the moon’s surface for man’s first moon landing on July 20, 1969. Joe was involved in many aerospace projects over the years and he helped design many systems used in aircraft today. He retired from Bendix (Allied Signal) in 1992.

Joe met his wife Phyllis (nee Nigro) at a YMCA dance in Jersey City during the late 1940’s. He asked her to dance that night, nearly 65 years ago, and the rest is history, as they say. They were married in 1953 at Sacred Heart RC Church in Jersey City and drove to Miami for their honeymoon, where they stayed at the Empress Hotel in Miami Beach. They have enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage together ever since, always at each other’s side.

They first settled in Fairview before moving to Wayne in 1964. Joe became involved as a baseball coach for the Wayne Little League. He was a great bowler and even played a little golf. Joe was also a Yankees fan and Joe DiMaggio was his favorite Yankee. He and Phyllis always watched the Yankees together on TV.

Joe was a faithful parishioner at Our Lady of Consolation RC Church in Wayne. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated there on Saturday.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of fifty nine years; Phyllis of Wayne, his two sons; Joseph and his wife Virginia of Dobbs Ferry, NY and Peter and his wife Heidi Kantor of Wayne, six grandchildren; Joseph Anthony and Francesco of Dobbs Ferry, and Aaron, Peter, Demi, and Steven of Wayne, one brother; John Staluppi and his wife Frances of Fort Lee, and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Jean Cecere, age 79 of Carthage, North Carolina and formerly of Ridgewood, NJ died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. She had been a resident of Ridgewood, raising her children there, before moving to Pinehurst in 1995.

Betty Jean had worked as the office manager at Harold’s Kosher Deli in Paramus for nearly seventeen years before retiring in 1995. She had met her husband, Joseph Cecere (2001) at Harold’s, where he was the butcher and they married in 1980. They retired together to Pinehurst, North Carolina, in 1995, near her daughter.

Betty Jean was devoted to raising her children, a task she accomplished almost entirely on her own. She was a strong woman, focused on keeping her children close and raising them right. She was strict, but also created a loving household which became the hub of activity for all the neighborhood kids. She earned the reputation as a ‘fun’ mom with her children’s friends, and there always seemed to be a bunch of them over at the house. She taught her kids how to play sports, was a Cub Scout den leader, and supported them in all that they did. She also enjoyed crochet for a number of years.

Her children recall having unique and memorable vacation road-trips. Before departing, she and her brother Robert would pool their savings together on the kitchen table.  They then would figure out about how far they could go. Once they hit the road, they would visit parks and tourist attractions, traveling as far as they could until half of the money was spent, at which point they would turn around and head home. Both of her children have wonderful memories to treasure from those trips, including the Catskills, Montreal, Amish country in Pennsylvania, and all around the East Coast.

Betty Jean took care of her ailing mother, Myrtle Conklin, in recent years. Myrtle passed in 2008 at the age of 97. Betty Jean struggled herself with Parkinson’s disease and congestive heart failure during the past several years and was very fortunate to have the loving care of her daughter Nancy, while living in North Carolina in Nancy's home.

Betty Jean is survived by her devoted daughter Nancy Randle Rogers and her husband Paul of Carthage, North Carolina, her son; Robert “Bud” Randle and his wife Helen of Wayne, her brother; Junior Conklin and his wife Joan of Wisconsin, and one aunt; Florence DeVoe of Alabama. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Cecere in 2001, her brother Robert Conklin in 1990, and her sister, Florence Scully in 1991.

Michael Patrick Higgins, age 56 of Wayne, died on Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Hackensack University Medical Center. He had fought a courageous battle with cancer and his family was gathered at his bedside when he passed.

Mike was raised in Wayne and was still living in the same house since he was a baby. He completed his elementary education at the old Preakness School and graduated from Wayne Hills High School with the class of 1974. Mike soon became interested in the newly developing computer field and took some classes at Chubb Institute. He received his degree and began working at a Swiss bank in New York City. He worked for several different banks over the years and most recently had been working for ASG Software Solutions (Allen Systems Group) of Naples, Florida, which enabled him to work primarily from home.

Mike was also a sports fanatic and an avid outdoorsman. He was a big Yankees fan and loved the Dallas Cowboys. He also played softball with the Wayne Men’s league on the “Desperado’s”. He enjoyed fishing up at the Monksville Reservoir, and hunting with his daughters and nephew. He had a time share in the Bahamas and they would go frequently. Spending time in the ocean, body surfing, and having a good time outdoors was what made him most happy. He traveled with his family to Disney World and several of the area amusement parks. His daughter Heather recalls the first time he took her on a roller coaster at Hershey Park – the “Comet”, and they had a blast! His younger daughter Rachel recalls vacationing in the Bahamas with her family as well as the memories of her Dad teaching her how to play card games such as Poker, Gin, and Blind Baseball (which was Mike's favorite).

Mike will always be loved and remembered by his two daughters; Heather and Rachel of Wayne, his two sisters; Barbara Staada and her husband George of West Milford, and Peggy White of Pennsylvania, his former wife; Dana Higgins, and many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends. Mike was predeceased by his father Thomas Charles Higgins in 2003 and his mother Lillian Higgins (nee Burtt) in 1991.

Melva Faber (nee Brown) age 85 of Indian Trail, North Carolina passed away on Monday, June 11, 2012 at home with her family gathered at her bedside. Her wonderful faith in her Lord and Savior became sight at the moment of her peaceful passing.

She was born in Paterson where she spent very happy childhood years. During her married life she lived in Haledon, NJ and also enjoyed family time on their farm in Albany, New York and also in Matamoras, Pennsylvania. In retirement years she settled in Indian Trail, North Carolina.

Melva received her formal education at Paterson Eastside High School. At age seventeen she went on a blind date with a handsome fellow by the name of George Faber. They went horseback riding in Haledon and as horses sometimes react with a stranger on their back it headed at a gallop for the barn. As the story goes on, George rescued her from this harrowing experience and two years later they married.

They had fifty-five years of wonderful marriage together until George’s passing in November 2000. Together they had four wonderful children whom they loved with all of their hearts.

Melva’s true dedication in her personal life journey was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She especially enjoyed family gatherings.

She had a wonderful faith in her Savior and while living in Indian Trail, North Carolina she regularly attended First Baptist Church of Indian Trail and in her New Jersey life she was a member of the Wyckoff Baptist Church in Wyckoff.

Her children will tell you that she was the best of the best Mother in the whole world.

Marie A. Costa age 79 of Clifton died peacefully on Saturday, June 9, 2012.

She was born and raised in Carlstadt, lived in East Rutherford, Clifton for fifty-one years, before moving to Wayne four years ago.

Marie was the self-designated official day care for all her grandchildren and was affectionately known as “Bingo Grandma” and “Mean Grandma”. She loved trips to Atlantic City with her husband Bob where they would play the slots for hours. She was also a fantastic cook. Her special touch on lasagna, meatballs, sausage, apple pie and cream cheese cookies will be greatly missed. We have included her Cream Cheese Cookie recipe below to help keep her memory alive.

Marie’s first date with Robert was a casual drive in his car. He proposed to her at a cousins wedding and they married on January 5, 1957 at the Robin Hood Inn in Clifton. They honeymooned in Miami Florida and have enjoyed 55 years of devoted marriage.

She was the loving wife of Robert Costa; devoted mother of Bob Costa and his wife Maryann of Chatham, Kim Frederick and her husband Jerry of Wayne, and Mike Costa and his wife Cathy of Vernon; cherished grandmother of Christina, Teresa(2011), Bobby, Craig, Amanda, Jerry, Toni, Joseph, Tyler, and Casey; dear great-grandmother of Jake; loved sister of Bernice Cheney and her husband Mike of Little Egg Harbor, and the late Joseph Pandorf.

Dorothy “Dottie” Stamboulian age 52 of Pompton Lakes died Saturday, June 9, 2012 at home after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer.

She was born in Paterson and lived in Paterson before moving to Pompton Lakes twenty years ago.

Dorothy was first employed at the age of fifteen by the Anderton Darby Corporation in Clifton as a secretary. She worked there until she was seventeen years old and then went to work for the New Jersey Bank in West Paterson. She also worked for Hoffman-LaRoche Corporation in Nutley before becoming a Legal Secretary at Connell Foley law firm of Roseland, where she has worked for the past twenty-four years.

Dottie will be remembered for her strength of character and perfectionism. She was a devoted and dedicated wife, daughter, sister, aunt, step-mother, and step-grandmother.

She met her husband Jack Vermeylen through family friends. Their first date was during a snow storm where they simply went to Jack’s home in Butler for drinks. They soon fell in love and Jack proposed marriage at his home in Tuckerton on the Fourth of July while at the backyard Tiki Bar with firecrackers going of all around them. They married in Las Vegas on August 25, 2006, Jack’s birthday, and honeymooned on a cruise in Alaska.

Dottie was the loving daughter of Violet Stamboulian of Pompton Lakes and the late John Stamboulian (1981); loving sister of Linda Berecz and her husband Joseph of Bloomingdale; loved aunt to Dawn and Keith; loved step-mother of five and step-grandmother of five. She will also be missed by her special Bijon Frise friend “Lucky”.

Philip J. Laprezioso, Sr., age 87 of Lincoln Park died peacefully on Thursday, June 7, 2012.

He was born and raised in the family home on Gordon Avenue in Totowa . Philip lived on Mill Street in Paterson before moving to Lincoln Park fifty-six years ago.

He enlisted in the United States Army on March 22, 1943and served during WWII with the 735th Bomb Squadron in Normandy and Northern France, Rhineland, Germany, Central Europe, and Ardennes, Belgium. He received the American Theater, European, African, and Middle Eastern Service Medals and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged on October 30, 1945.

After his military service he was a partner is a Paterson service station and then worked as a Forman for a contractor named Sam Comforth. He was the Forman overseeing the building of the Fair Lawn Hospital which is now the Maple Glen Center Nursing Home. His experience in the building trade inspired him to open his own contracting company in Lincoln Park which he named PJL & Sons. The business ran for over forty years before Philip retired in 1995. Although he was retired he was still tackling building projects for his family up until just two years ago.

Philip was an exempt member of the Lincoln Park Fire Company where he donated his time to the community for over twenty-five years. He was also a member and served as Secretary of the Lincoln Park Lions Club for many years. Philip enjoyed sketching, drawing, bowling, and playing cards. He was always good with children, unless they were his own all of whom were fired from PJL & Sons more times than they can remember.

He was the loving husband of the late Tina (DiNatale) Laprezioso (1999); devoted father of Philip Laprezioso and his wife Denita of Pequannock, Donny Laprezioso and his wife Elaine of East Stroudsburg, PA, and Frank Laprezioso and his wife Patricia, and the late Jimmy Laprezioso (1971); cherished grandfather of Nicholas Laprezioso; dear brother of Jennie, and Willy Laprezioso of Totowa, and the late Annie, Lucy, Theresa, Matt, Josie, and Grace.

Madeline C. Neitz (nee Tonkin) age 64 of Wayne died Wednesday, June 6, 2012.

She was born in East Orange, to Frederick and Claire (McNeill) Tonkin, and lived in the Packanack Lake Section of Wayne having graduated from Wayne Valley High School with the Class of 1966. She also lived in Dover Pennsylvania, West Milford, Wayne, and Little Falls before moving to Haskell.

Madeline was an Administrative Assistant having worked for Calvin Klein in Wayne and Creative Sales in Lincoln Park before retiring in 2010.

She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and was an avid reader.

Madeline attended Immaculate Heart of Mary RC Church in Wayne.

She was the loving mother of Richard “Rick” P. Neitz of Sugar Land, Texas, Jennifer A. Neitz of Passaic, and the late Michael Neitz (1990); she was the loved grandmother of Connor Neitz, Nicole Neitz, and the late Robert Neitz; she was the sister of Ferderick Tonkin of Pompton Plains and the late Patricia Odierno (2002).

Guy L. Bodine, age 59 of Wayne, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 06, 2012.

He was born in Orange, NJ and has lived in Wayne for the past forty years. He was an independent contractor, performing small specialty work throughout the area.

Guy was a very talented artist with just about any kind of medium. He created oil paintings, pastels, charcoal, sculpture, and all of his work was incredibly unique, often mixing different mediums. He was quite shy and preferred to keep to himself, expressing himself skillfully through his art. He was also an avid and voracious reader, having read literally thousands of books, newspapers, magazines, and anything else he could get his hands on. He also had a fine appreciation for early-genre horror movies such as the old Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi films; Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man, and many others.

Although he was the quiet type, he would surprise his family every so often with a witty quip that would put everyone in stitches. That was his way, and it took a long time for him to warm up to you, to be comfortable enough in your presence, that he would then surprise you with his humor.

Guy is survived by his brother Carle Bodine and his wife Linda of Wayne. He was predeceased by his dear mother, Frances Bodine, in 1978 and his father Carle Sr., in 1971.

Richard James Breen age 82 of Wayne died Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Care One Health Care Facility in Wayne.

He lived in Wayne for many years.

He was born in the Bronx, New York where he lived his formative years. Richard received his formal education first at Public School 46 in the Bronx and then went on to High School at Roosevelt High School in the Bronx graduating with the Class of 1947.

Perhaps the most enjoyable years in his life was his many visits to a farm owned by his Maternal Grandparents located at Jeffersonville in New York State. It was called the Horvath Farm and what a delightful experience for each member of the family including Richard to visit the farm and live a delightful country living experience before returning to the Bronx to live in their small apartment. That farm was a grand escape for many years.

Soon after his High School graduation he joined the Navy and after serving for three years he was admitted to Pace College in New York City where he studied accounting. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. He then obtained a permanent accounting position with the New York Academy of Medicine where he worked as Chief Accountant until his retirement in 1994.

Richard will always be remembered for his dedication to his Mother and his mother’s sister Lillian Horvath. He nurtured them lovingly for many years until their individual deaths.

Surviving to savor many enjoyable family experiences are his sister Barbara Battista and her husband Raymond of Garnes, North Carolina; Niece Lynn Kash and her husband Andrew of Raleigh, NC, a nephew Brian Kash of Garner, NC and cousins Ilona Kretzmer of Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Mary Patterson, age 97, of Hackensack died peacefully on Sunday, June 3, 2012. Mary was born in West New York, New Jersey and was a resident of Hackensack, NJ for the last 25 years.

Her Father Michael Chiurazzi Arrived in the United States on August 11, 1897. He left from Naples Italy on the Ship Victoria. Her Mother Giuseppina Mercante arrived in the United States on April 10,1908. She left from Naples Italy on the ship Venezia.

She was married to the late Raymond Patterson (1995) and is survived by her three children, Robert Patterson and his wife Gayle of Wayne, Patricia Stein and her husband Mark of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Raymond Patterson, Jr. of Kissimmee, FL; cherished grandmother of Kelly O’Brien and her husband Chris, Ryan Patterson, Richard Stein and his wife Doreen, Raymond Patterson, Sean Patterson and his wife Amy, Steven Conti and his wife Samantha, Robert Conti and his wife Sol; devoted great-grandmother of Christian O’Brien, Noelle O’Brien, Kristopher Stein, Melody Stein, Cory Patterson, Alexis Patterson, Hope Patterson and Kyle Patterson.

Mary loved playing Bingo and could often be found at the Maywood, Hackensack, Garfield, and Lodi senior centers trying her luck. She was a great cook and baker. Her special touch on traditional Sicilian recipes will be greatly missed. A family favorite is her Spinach Pie…we have included her recipe below to keep her memory alive.

Mary will always be remembered for her generosity, kindness, sense of humor, honesty and graciousness. She as the nucleus of her family and touched the lives of many. She will be missed greatly.

She met her husband at the Lipton Tea Factory in Hudson County New Jersey and they married on May 31, 1941 at St. Joseph’s of the Palisades RC Church in West New York. They enjoyed fifty-one years of loving marriage until Raymond’s passing in October of 1995.

Rinse Spinach & de stem then pat dry

Cover with Spinach, Add Grated Parmesan and Mozzarella Cheese

Add Salt..Pepper and Oregano all to taste...not to liberally

Drizzle Olive Oil then roll like a jelly roll and place in a pan or on cookie sheet seam side down. If it doesn't fit shape into a crescent .......brush whole outside with olive oil using pastry brush.

Also coat bottom on pan or cookie sheet "lightly" with olive oil.

Bake uncovered till brown about 20 minutes at 350 Degrees

(Variation is shred 3 or 4 carrots and add in with spinach)

Lorraine Doris (Muzik) Bremer was born on May 29th, 1933 in Passaic, NJ the daughter of the late Frank Muzik and Augusta (Lewindowski) Muzik.

A longtime resident of Wayne, she passed away on Sunday, June 3 at the age of 79.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Bremer in 1988 and her brother, Frank Muzik in 2008.

Craig R. Beacham, age 57 of Wayne died on Sunday, June 3, 2012.

Born in Passaic, Craig grew up in Packanack Lake. He was afflicted with Cerebral Palsy since birth but pushed himself through school and graduated from Passaic County Technical High School in 1973. He began working as a lathe operator in a Wayne factory where he worked for many years. Later, he moved with his mother to Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania and became a plumber’s helper. He enjoyed that line of work up until 2008. He then moved back to Packanack Lake to live with his sister and brother-in-law in 2010. He always enjoyed woodworking projects and tinkering around. He also did quite a bit of fishing, boating, played video games and traveled with his mother. He rode horseback to Havasu Village in Grand Canyon and also vacationed on a houseboat at Lake Powell. His favorite vacation spot was Williamsburg, Virginia. He didn’t let his disability hold him back from much, but he never the less longed to simply be ‘normal’ and free of any handicap. Surely he is free of such ailments now, enjoying his reward in Heaven.

Craig is survived by his sister Cathy McManus and her husband Jack of Wayne, and his two nieces; Cara Aranda and Jackie Sampogna. He was predeceased by his mother Colleen Beacham in 1995, his father Robert in 1970, and his brother Bruce in 2009.

On June 1, 2012 our beloved mother Viola Cascone went to her eternal rest.

Viola was born and raised in Paterson by her parents Silvio and Giuseppina (Josephine) DiPaola who immigrated to the U.S. from Italy in the early 1900s. She received her formal education at elementary school #10 and at Eastside High School in Paterson graduating with the Class of 1936. She had several jobs including working at her father's shoe and clothing store as a young teenager.

Viola married Joseph (Joe) Cascone in 1946 upon his return from Germany where he served his country in WWII. Joe and Viola had a very loving marriage together for 44 years; she was widowed in 1990. Viola then moved to Pequannock Township.

She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Rosary Society and a librarian for the Riverside branch library in Paterson.

What she enjoyed most was being a homemaker for her husband and her two sons. Her life's passion was being a grandmother and role model to her three grandchildren.

Viola was predeceased by her parents, husband Joe, brother Bernard, sisters Mildred and Rose, and beloved niece Bernice LaPorta.

Viola is survived by her two sons Paul and his wife Marie (Del Mar, CA); Robert and his wife Nancy (Pequannock); sisters Louise Torrell (Maywood) and Marge "Babe" Alvino (Paterson); three cherished grandchildren, Timothy and his wife Rosie (England), Rob and his wife Heather (Pequannock), and Karen; as well as a beloved great granddaughter Katie (England).

Michael S. Stevens age 79 of Wayne died peacefully at home on Thursday, May 31, 2012.

He was born in New York City and raised in Bronx New York having graduated from Gompers High School with the Class of 1950. He took a job as an ambulance driver for St. Clare’s Hospital in New York where he worked from 1951 through 1952. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served during the Korean War. During his service he was a boxer for the 1st Marine Division. He received the National Defense Service Ribbon, Korean Service Ribbon, United Nations Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

He met the love of his life Lois Wingrove on a blind date where they went to a movie and dinner. When he enlisted in the Marines he gave Lois a picture of himself which she used to stave off advances but never intended to date let alone marry Michael after his service. When Michael returned from the Marine Corps he went to visit Lois in Schenectady New York as she was caring for her grandmother. The family fell in love with him immediately and Lois’ love for him soon followed. They married at Saint Adalbert’s RC Church in Schenectady on April 14, 1956. Neither Michael nor Lois had any money for a honeymoon so they stayed in the Bronx New York. They have enjoyed a wonderful marriage for fifty-six years and can truly say they never had cross words with each other.

Upon completing his service in the Marine Corps Michael took a job with the Service Sign Erectors Company in New York where he worked for thirty-five years before retiring in 1990. Michael installed signs on many New York City landmarks and set up the Christmas decorations on the exterior of Macy’s and for many of the suburban towns of New York and New Jersey.

Michael was dedicated to his Catholic faith and was a parishioner and member of the Holy Name Society of Our Lady of the Valley RC Church in Wayne.

He was the loving husband of Lois (nee Wingrove) Stevens; devoted father of Tracy Campbell and her husband John Wanczowski of Wayne, Michael Stevens of Toms River, and Matthew Stevens and his wife Danielle of Wayne; cherished grandfather of Corey Stevens, Courtney, Christopher and Kyle Campbell; five brothers Frank, Anthony, Casimer, Peter, Paul, and one sister Mary survive him; siblings John, Stanley, Diane(Josephine), and Bertha(Bobbie) predeceased him.

Muriel Clara (nee Geiger) Miller, age 93 of Pompton Lakes, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 30, 2012.

Muriel is survived by her son Dr. Gary Miller and his wife Laura, her daughter Barbara Miller, and her daughter Debbie Deraney and her husband Hank, three grandsons; Hank III, Jim and Daniel Deraney, and her sister and brother-in-law; Grace and Jim Meyer. Her oldest sister Lillian and grandson Greg Miller predeceased her.

Muriel was the second of three daughters born to Frank and Camille Geiger and grew up in Bergenfield, NJ. She skipped first grade and graduated from Tenafly High School in 1936. On a blind double date with her best childhood friend, she met her soon-to-be husband Walter Miller, Jr. of Butler, NJ. Walt was drafted into the Army following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and they were married after he attended boot camp in February of 1942. He served under General George Patton at the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.

After World War II, the Miller family moved to Butler, where they raised their three children. Following the death of Walter in 1976, Muriel took a job working for the president of Galesi Realty, a prominent local real estate development company.

Muriel had a great love of travel and enjoyed many years of traveling both in America and Europe, with trips to Hawaii, England, Ireland, Scandinavia, Greece, Portugal, and Italy.

John H. Peri, age 45 of Peapack-Gladstone, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 30, 2012.

John was a trader with Concept Capital Markets, LLC in Manhattan and had also worked at Knight Capital Group for many years.

John had lived in Elmwood Park as a young boy. Sadly, he lost his father in 1971 when he was just four and a half years old. In 1974, his mother married Joseph Peri and their family moved to Wayne. John’s family, now merged with the Peri family, included seven children.

Athletics was the one thing that defined John. Ever since he was a baby, he always had a ball in his hand. Football, baseball, soccer, you name it – he played it well. During his time at Wayne Hills High School, he was a pitcher for the Patriots baseball team, a star kicker for the football team, and an excellent soccer player. After college, he took up golf and found that to be his new love. He played golf often and had introduced his son Ritchie to the game too, getting him lessons with a golf-pro and encouraging him to play. He was a Yankee’s fan and enjoyed going to Giants home games whenever he could.

John’s children were the light of his life and nothing brought him more joy than they did. All three of them are athletes and John was very proud to be involved with coaching them. He was also proud of their musical talents; each of them can play the piano, saxophone and guitar. Date-nights with his daughter C.J. were particularly special, including their visits to the American Girl Doll store in Manhattan.

John is survived by his wife Sheila of Peapack-Gladstone, his three children; Ritchie, Celia, and Jonathan (Rocco), his parents; Patricia and Joe Peri of Wayne, and six siblings; James Peri and his wife Michele, Robert Peri and his wife Ann, Joseph Leskow and his wife Sandra of Wayne, Glen Peri, Michael Peri and his wife Tiffani, Glen Peri, and Joanne Ballard and her husband Jeff, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Lisa Bateson age 32 of Lake Hopatcong died peacefully on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at St. Claire’s Hospital in Denville.

She was born at Chilton Hospital in Pompton Plains and was raised in Pompton Lakes. She graduated from Pompton Lakes High School with the Class of 1997 and continued her education having graduated from Roman Academy in Hawthorne. Lisa has lived in Lake Hopatcong for the past three years.

Lisa worked alongside her mother and brother at ECI Conference Call services in Wayne for five years where she was responsible for operating and running large scale investor relation calls for companies among the likes of Bear Sterns and Goldman Sachs. Lisa took great pride in her job while there and loved the many people she worked with. Lisa met many friends while working at ECI and it was great to see so many people come to visit her while in the hospital. ECI was eventually bought out by another company and Lisa moved on to work in the family business at McKenna’s Pub in Lake Hopatcong.

She loved the outdoors and enjoyed going to the beach, camping, and fishing. Lisa was such a fun, outgoing, caring person. She loved to laugh and have a good time.  She loved her family more than anything.  Being there for them was the most important thing in Lisa’s life. She loved people, but more importantly, she loved helping people. She always thought of others before herself.  She was there for anyone, no matter the time or place.  If you needed her, she was there.  This is just who Lisa was. She had a heart of gold. Her smile is something that will always be remembered.  Lisa will be deeply missed by all.

Lisa was predeceased by both of her parents, Robert Bateson and Lindy McKenna. She was the loving daughter of Robert McKenna of Lake Hopatcong, and loving sister of Robert Bateson and his wife Joslyn Bateson of Hamburg, Kimberly Bateson and her husband Dean Mamakos of Wayne; loved granddaughter of Janny Nitschelm of Pompton Lakes and her late husband Albert; devoted niece of Yvonne Micholas of Pompton Lakes and Mike Micholas of Manchester; dear cousin of Michael and Michele Micholas. Lisa loved and was loved by everyone in our family.

Elizabeth Grace Ricciardi (nee Grier), born December 29, 1939, age 72.  "Liz", formerly of Jersey City, NJ, entered into rest on May 28, 2012 at 8:10am.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Robert Grier 55, Lila Black "Block" 54, predeceased brothers William, Robert, Eddie, Michael, and surviving sisters Cathy Johnson and her husband Sonny of Farmington, New York and Carol Stuart of Secaucus, New Jersey.

Beloved mother of John Ricciardi Jr, Michael Francis Ricciardi, wife Karen Boyle, and Christopher Robert Ricciardi.

Loving grandmother "Nana" to John's sons Nicholas, Robert Johnathon, and Michael's kids Anthony "AJ”, and Victoria; Liz is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

She had three wonderful boys and she devoted her time to her family.  Her children look back with great admiration and appreciation for their mother’s love, dedication and devotion to them. She always worked hard to support her family and was a wonderful provider for them. Thanks Mom for being so special in our lives.

Liz worked as an executive secretary at Lipton Tea in Hoboken, NJ 1954-1961, New Jersey, Van Es Catering, Secaucus, NJ 1964-1974 making all food inventory of a fleet of 30 catering vans, Wedgwood, Secaucus, NJ, Consumer Distributorship Secaucus/Elizabeth, NJ, Leisure Line Toys Secaucus NJ, Ricciardi Brothers of Secaucus Inc., Secaucus, NJ, Ricciardi Construction Inc., Secaucus, NJ, Ricciardi Florist, Secaucus, NJ where she designed floral arrangement's, Freedman's Bakery Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, Point Laundromat Point Pleasant Beach.  Second Career went into nursing and became a CNA and LPN and worked in the following locations: Secaucus State of NJ..DCF Regional School, Neptune Ocean Medical Center, and Lakewood home for adult MS Disabled.  1998-2001 Customer Service Manager Facilities @ Tower I & II New Brunswick, NJ, retiring in 1995. After retiring Grandmother "Nana" helped raise son John's three sons who was a single dad from 1998-2001. Finally after a long hard life she was able to begin to rest and moved into the Elms Building in retirement.

Elizabeth is an unknown artist who has some beautiful pieces yet to be shown public & she is known to kids as the puzzle lady for all the puzzles she made & gave to the kids. Old school friends remember her for being the cub scout mom who drove all the kids around town in her VW Bug.

In 1995 cancer came to her 1st in skin cancer and she fought on and was past all the skin treatments by 2004.

In 2008 she developed colon cancer and after two long years of operations and treatments she was cancer free in 2010.

In 2011 cancer redeveloped as she got ovarian cancer and fought through three major surgeries and never once complained to anyone all along the way of her cancer fights.

She has impacted so many souls along this cancer path that her spirit will be impossible for anyone who even walked in her path to ever not be touched by the sweetest of souls, an angel on earth that now looks over her loved ones from heaven where Elizabeth can now finally be at rest.

Thomas J. Rodgers age 85 of New Hope, Pennsylvania formerly of Wayne, passed to his place in heaven on Friday evening, May 18, 2012 with his family at his bedside.

He was born in Newark and had lived his formative years in Irvington. Tom received his formal education at Saint Leo’s Grammar School in Irvington and then at the Irvington High School graduating with the Class of 1944.

Soon after high school he enlisted in the Navy on September 14th, 1944 and served his country until his discharge in June of 1946. He served on the USS Cotton and took pride in the fact that he was in Tokyo harbor on the day that Japan signed the surrender papers on the USS Missouri battle ship. He received the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and the American Theater Medal. Over the years Tom enjoyed attending Naval reunions and meeting and socializing with a lot of fellow servicemen.

He was employed for years as an Electrotypographer for Art Color Corporation in Dunellen, NJ. He left there and became a Metropolitan Life Insurance agent. He then established his own kitchen remodeling business, The Kitchen Beautician, located in Wayne. This was his passion and he loved

He had lived in Newark before moving to Wayne in 1952. The family lived on Graham Avenue in Wayne which was one of Wayne’s first housing developments. He had a wonderful marriage for fifty-six years to Alice (nee Lewis) Rodgers and together they raised three daughters and a son in Wayne. His children have said, with joy in their hearts, that he was the “Best Dad” in the whole world. After 50 years in Wayne he and his wife retired to New Hope, Pennsylvania in 2002.

Tom and his children were charter parishioners of Our Lady of The Valley RC Church. Tom was active in his church, working at Bingo, helping with ushering, involved with the couples Marriage Encounter group, and was an active member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society of Our Lady of The Valley Church. He was also a member of the Wayne Elks Lodge 2181.

Tom was gifted with a wonderful outgoing personality and as a result he developed many lifetime friendships. He was a man full of love and respect for all and was devoted to his family. He and his family looked forward to the Outer Banks “Week at the Beach” and his famous “Sabrett” hot dog lunch!! The memories from those 20 plus years will be in the family’s hearts forever.

Tom lived life to the fullest and enjoyed everyday he lived, always looking for the best in people. He taught his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, honesty and integrity. He truly enriched the life of everyone he touched. He will be missed by all.

His wife Alice M. Rodgers (nee Lewis) predeceased him in November 2004. Survivors include one son Thomas Rodgers and his wife Evan of Sterling, VA; three daughters Eileen Feigenbaum and her husband Steven of Long Valley, Patricia Simone and her husband Gary of Hillsborough, Nancy O’Brien and her husband William of Summit. Nine grandchildren Emily and David Feigenbaum, Megan Simone Kemph, Jeffrey and Ryan Simone, Michael, Rebecca and Suzanne Rodgers and Bridget O’Brien. He also leaves behind his companion of 7 years, Lyn Hieber, of New Hope Pa.

Cynthia E. Bizzozzaro (nee Gilman) age 55 of Manalapan died on Friday May 18, 2012 at Hackensack Medical Center with her family at her bedside after a long battle with cancer.

Cynthia was born in Paterson and was raised in Wayne until she moved to Manalapan over 30 years ago with her husband Michael. She devoted her life to being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She was also a swimming instructor for the YMCA and she was greatly devoted to her Catholic Faith. Cynthia loved to make jewelry and had a Golden Retriever named Nikki that she loved as well. Cynthia’s family remembers her as being inviting, caring and understanding and able to make anyone laugh even in the worst of situations. Cynthia cherished over 30 years of marriage to her husband Michael and over the years she enjoyed cruising to the Caribbean, treasured watching her children grow up and eventually her only grandchild Dominick being born. She was a wonderful daughter-in-law, a great friend to anyone whom she met, and will be greatly missed by her friends and family alike.

Kit Elaine Calligaro (born Rickert) of Smoke Rise in Kinnelon was 54 years old when she died peacefully on May 15, 2012 after a year – long struggle with cancer.

She was born in Mobile Alabama, but moved around the country frequently with her family, eventually returning to Mobile. She graduated from UMS – Wright School where she excelled academically and in track and tennis. Kit then drove her MG to USC and graduated Magna Cum Laude in three years in 1976.

Kit came to New Jersey to work in her family company, gradually building a career from marketing assistant to executive vice president of operations, and eventually to chairman of the board.

Kit met her future husband, Cal in 1983, introduced by her beagle while peeing on his car. It was love at first sight. Cal swallowed his pride and fear of horses and proposed marriage on horseback in 1984.

Her passion turned to becoming a mom, raising her daughter with still talked about fun antics and great kids’ events from fishing to scavenger hunts. Her love of horseback riding inspired a pony ride party at her home that lead to encouraging her daughter, Jen, to a life – filled interest in equestrian sports.

Known for her insatiable curiosity to learn, after leaving company life she studied law at Seaton Hall University. At first she clerked for the Honorable Judge Seltser where she learned to love law, and then began her practicing legal career in family law with Schiffman, Abraham, Kaufman & Ritter. There she fulfilled her dream of helping people under stress with her compassion framed in steel willed curiosity about getting at the facts and applying the rules of law.

From 1984 she was married to W. E. (Cal) Calligaro for the next 28 years, whom she tolerated with her wit, tenderness and love.

Kit is survived by her daughter, Jen, husband, Cal along with her loving mother Lolly Rickert and brother Doug Rickert and his wife Holly.

Gertrude “Trudy” Spann (nee Reinecke), age 89 of Wayne, died on Tuesday, May 15, 2012.  She was born in West New York, NJ and raised in River Edge, NJ having graduated from Hackensack High School with the Class of 1940.

She met the love of her life Edward Spann at a Lutheran Church convention in Trenton, NJ. He left the convention and went home and told his mother “I met the girl I’m going to marry”. After a stint in the military Edward returned and began dating Trudy once again. Their first date was to a movie and then to Rutt’s Hut for a hamburger. He proposed in the car with Trudy’s mom flicking the front light-the signal that enough private time had been spent in the car. They married on December 1, 1945 at the Grace Lutheran Church, River Edge. They spent their honeymoon in Washington DC and incorporated a visit to Trudy’s sister Anita who was serving time in the United States Navy and was stationed in the Washington area. Trudy stated that during the first year of their marriage they would have starved if Edward hadn’t done the cooking. They lived in Clifton, Wayne, and Parsippany before retiring to Brooksville, FL in 1984. Edward passed away on November 16, 2009 and Trudy returned to Wayne, NJ in 2010 to be closer to her family.

Before graduating High School Trudy was recruited by the Bell Telephone Company to work as an receptionist and telephone operator from 1945-1955 for NJ Bell Telephone in Hackensack, NJ. From 1955-1965 she sold Tupperware door to door and from 1970 – 1985 she worked as a receptionist for the Becton Dickinson Corporation in West Caldwell, NJ.

Trudy and her late husband Edward were founding members of St. Timothy Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wayne where Trudy was always a reliable volunteer.

She loved to travel and has been to Hawaii twice, Alaska, California, Florida and on five cruises. She enjoyed spending time at the Community Social Club and the Garden Club in Brooksville, FL but most of all she enjoyed writing letters, sending cards and shopping from catalogs. Her special touch on German Potato Salad was a family favorite.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of sixty-four years Edward Spann (2009); loving mother of Jeffrey and April Spann of Rockaway and Richard and Janet Spann of Bethel, CT; cherished grandmother of Kelly, Ryan, Lauren and Craig; loved sister of Anita Phoenix and her husband Lee of North Carolina and Henriette Anderson of Whiting, NJ.

Scully P. Lobosco, age 90, of Cedar Crest Village, Pompton Plains, NJ, died peacefully at Chilton Memorial Hospital on May 10, 2012.

Scully was born and raised in Paterson, NJ. He graduated from Central High School in 1940. Then, continued his education at Stevens Institute of Technology and the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics. After his education, he joined the Army Air Force and trained flight teams while stationed in Texas.

After the War, he returned to the family business, R. Lobosco & Sons, located on McBride Avenue, Paterson, NJ. Scully married Marie Pugliese in 1944 and raised three children in the family home located in Totowa, NJ. He loved to garden and was always accompanied by the family dog (which was always named Lisa for some reason). He was a loyal fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants. However, his greatest joy was being with his family and grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was quick to laugh even at his own expense.

Scully lost his wife last year after sixty seven years of marriage. He was the cherished father of Ross Lobosco of Totowa, NJ; Maria Lobosco of High Falls, NY; Jeanette Lobosco-Malone and her husband, Ralph Malone of Hamptonburgh, NY. He was the cherished grandfather of Sean and Vanessa Lobosco of Elmwood Park, NJ and Stacy Lobosco of Hoboken, NJ. He was the loved brother of the late Angelo Lobosco of Boynton Beach, FL and the late Michael Lobosco of Paterson, NJ.

Martin J. Tracey, 83, of Wayne died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Morristown Memorial Hospital with family by his side.

Marty was born and raised in Ossining, NY. After graduating from Ossining High School in 1947 he attended New York State Maritime Academy graduating in 1950. He lived in Yorktown Heights, NY and Middlebush, NJ before moving to Wayne 29 years ago.

He was a mechanical engineer working for Standard Brands, E.R. Squibb, and GAF Corp., until his retirement more than 20 years ago.

Marty spent countless hours with family and friends at “The Farm” in Long Eddy, NY.

He was an avid deer hunter, bird watcher and voracious reader. Marty was a lifetime member and ex-chief of the Middlebush Fire Department, and an active member of the NRA. He was a “Mr Fix-It” who could repair anything. Marty was a devoted family man.

He and his wife Lucille were married for almost 25 years.

Marty is survived by his wife Lucille (nee Bayersdorfer), daughter Lynn Wilson and her husband Richard of Dunedin, FL, son Tim and his wife Jean of Hubbell, MI, daughter Gale Tracey of Bedminster, NJ; stepdaughters Christine Peraino and her late husband William and Laurie Mundy and her late husband Bob, both of Vernon. He was predeceased by stepdaughter Barbara Kirk. He is survived by his sister Peggy Barrett of Mission Veijo, CA. Marty has 8 grandchildren, Timmy, Jessica, Erin, Rich, Lisa, Chrissy, Cindi and Karla and 5 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his grandson Kevin.

He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Shirley S. Menendez, age 89 of Pompton Plains died on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at the Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Shirley was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ and graduated from Snyder High School in 1940. At that time, it was customary for her to spend the summers at her Uncle Phil’s farm in Neshanic Station, NJ. It was at a barn dance there that she met Henry Menendez. Henry had actually come to the dance with a date, but by the time the evening was over, he had become acquainted with Shirley. The two of them hit it off right from the start and were married in 1942.

After getting married, they first settled in Jersey City but traded in their tiny apartment in 1955 for a home in Pompton Plains. They loved it there and enjoyed raising their two daughters in what was truly the ‘country’ back then. Shirley never left that home and has lived there for the past fifty- seven years. She also had long career as an executive assistant at Edwards Engineering in Pompton Plains, retiring after nearly thirty years in 1990

Shirley and Henry enjoyed fifty-seven years together before he passed in 1999. They had been very active members of the Masons, Shriners, and Shirley was a 60-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron of Mountain View Chapter No.205 and a Past Grand Officer of the State of New Jersey. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Malaas 20, Livingston, NJ.

Shirley was an avid reader and a huge Yankees fan. During the past few weeks in the hospital, her family would make sure her TV was tuned to the game and the speaker on her pillow so she could listen.

She was also a member of the United Methodist Church in Wayne where she would drive every Sunday for services.

Shirley is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Janet Blum of Vernon, three grandchildren; Suzanne Meredith and her husband John of Rochester, NY, Steven Blum of Spring Hill, FL, and Wendy Rafferty and her husband Charles of Sandy Hook, CT, and three great-grandchildren; Cora Meredith, Callan and Chatham Rafferty. She was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1999, her daughter Elaine Mitchell in 1975, one sister and three brothers.

Philip Call age 67 of Wayne died suddenly on Tuesday May 8, 2012 in his home.

Philip was born and raised in Paterson and lived with his wife Joanne in Butler for 10 years before moving to Wayne 16 years ago. His life’s work was hairdressing and he was a long time business owner of several different businesses including “Illusions The Salon” in Fairlawn. After parting with his business he worked for several different companies including Serenity Styles in Fairlawn until his passing. Philip was also proud of his service in the Army National Guard from 1966 – 1971.

He cherished 27 years of marriage to his wife Joanne (nee Bongardino) and was a devoted father and grandfather. His family remembers him loving to play golf and cards, poker in particularly. But of all his devotions, his greatest passion was to his family.  

Philip is survived by his Wife Joanne (nee Bongardino) of Wayne; his daughter Shelby Viasso and her husband Brian of Mahwah; a step-daughter Vanessa Koppel and her husband Rob of West Long Branch; and 4 grandchildren Shaun, Robby, Skylar, and Brenna. He was also pre-deceased by his brother Lewis Call in 2011.

Patricia Lynn DiPadova (nee Scine), age 53 of Wayne, left this earth peacefully, on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at home with her family by her side.

Patty was born in Paterson and grew up in the Hillcrest section, graduating from John F. Kennedy High School with the class of 1976. She took her first job as a clerk for Judge Carmen Ferrante in the Passaic County Court House and enjoyed her career there for 12 years before starting a family. Years later, she became involved in the Wayne Valley School System and worked in the cafeteria. She retired from that position in 2006.

Patty will always have her loving son, Joseph DiPadova IV  and his girlfriend Alyssa Rosenberg of Wayne; her devoted mother Theresa Scine of Wayne; her brother Don Scine, wife Leanne Scine and her niece and Goddaughter Derynn Scine of Franklin Lakes; her former husband Joseph DiPadova III and his wife Natasha; and many special aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Patty was predeceased by her father, Patrick Scine in 1993.

Helen Guzik (nee Rog) age 84 of Newton, formerly of Pompton Lakes died peacefully on Sunday, May 6, 2012.

She was born in Clifton and met the love of her life, Edmund S. Guzik, through her extended family. They married on September 13, 1947 at Saint Josephs RC Church, Passaic. They took a bus to the Poconos for their honeymoon and established their home in Paterson.

Helen was a secretary for the Hoffman La-Roche Company, Clifton before raising her family. They had three of their four children while living in Paterson and later moved to Pompton Lakes where they had their fourth child.

She was a parishioner of Annunciation RC Church in Wayne where she was a Eucharistic Minister, member of the choir and the Prime Timers. She also volunteered at Eva’s Kitchen in Paterson.

Helen enjoyed all types of sports and was an accomplished bowler. It is rumored that Edmund and Helen’s first date was to a bowling alley.

She is the beloved wife of sixty-five years to Edmund S. Guzik; devoted mother of Stephen Guzik and his wife Susan of Milltown, Cinthia Irwin and her husband Kenneth of Moorestown, Sharon Woelfel and her husband Eric of Long Valley and the late Glenn Guzik(2002); cherished grandmother of Jonathan Guzik of Clark and Luke Woelfel of Long Valley; beloved sister of the late Frances Dabal, Veronica Bonkowski, Stephanie Nogrady and Jean Zajac.

Jean Cerv, age 85 of Wayne, died on Saturday May 5, 2012.

Jean was born at home in Passaic to John and Mary Szot. Her mother had emigrated from Poland when she was just fifteen years old. She graduated from Passaic High School in 1945. She lived in Clifton but as the town became more populated, she decided to move to Wayne in 1965.

Wayne was dotted with farms at that time, and at their first home near Van Peenen’s dairy, it wasn’t uncommon to have a few cows get loose and wander through their yard every so often. Among the places she lived in Wayne throughout the years, Packanack Lake was her favorite. She enjoyed golfing at the Packanack Golf Club and also played bridge every month with a group of her friends. She loved the sense of community there and was thrilled when her daughter bought a house there too. When maintaining her own home became overwhelming she moved to Sisco Village, but driving around Packanack, and visiting with her daughter there, remained a joy to her. She also enjoyed their vacation home in the Pocono’s where she would take the kids skiing in the winter, and they spent a couple of weeks there in the summers. The beach was probably her favorite place to visit and they often went to Point Pleasant Beach, Ocean Beach, and Lavallette at the Jersey Shore.

Jean is survived by her daughter Debbie Cervellino and her husband John of Wayne, and her son Thomas Cerv of Alabama, and one granddaughter.

Barbara A. Carbone (nee Dunning) age 82 of Hamburg died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 5 ,2012.

She was born and raised in Nescopec, Pennsylvania and lived in Rockaway New Jersey as a teenager having graduated from Rockaway High School with the Class of 1947. She lived in Rockaway for many years having lived in Orlando, Florida and returning to Rockaway before moving to Hamburg eight years ago.

Barbara worked for the Delta Novelty Company in Paterson, Yardley of London in Wayne, and the Shulton Corporation in Clifton before becoming a cafeteria supervisor for the Singer Kearfott Corporation in West Paterson before retiring in 1974.

She will be remembered as a great cook whose special touch on many family favorite recipe’s will be greatly missed. Barbara enjoyed showing love to her family through her cooking; whether it was her special salad dressing, turkey, pot roast, or pickled red beat eggs her love was a big part of each recipe. She enjoyed word search books, playing cards, and doing anything she could to help you.

Barbara was the loving wife of Benny Carbone; devoted mother of Joanna Osbun and her husband Lewis of Stockholm, Brian Dowd and his wife Betsy of Little Egg Harbor; dear sister of the late Raymond, and John Dunning, Ronald Dunning and his wife Linda of NC and Leon Dunning and his wife Joan of NM; cherished grandmother of eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth “Betty” Buckley (nee Jures) age 91 of Wayne, died Thursday, May 3, 2012, peacefully with the comfort of family by her side.

She was born and raised in Newark having graduated from Madison High School with the Class of 1937.

Just out of high school she worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Newark.

She met Harold Buckley on a blind date and they soon fell in love. They married on May 25, 1946 at St. Antonius RC Church in Newark and honeymooned in Atlantic City. They have enjoyed thirty-three years of loving marriage.

Betty was a founding member, dedicated parishioner, and cared for the Altar Cloth’s for over thirty years, of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary RC Church in Wayne.

She was a member of the Golden Age Circle of Wayne and a former member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Betty was a true lady who was conservative, quiet, private, and an avid reader who could often be found at the Wayne Public Library’s Preakness branch.

June Van Wageninge, age 69 of Wayne died on Tuesday, May 1, 2012.

June was a teacher at Randall Carter Elementary School in Wayne and taught first grade there for most of her forty-year career, retiring in 2003.

June received her Bachelors degree from William Paterson College and later returned there to earn her Masters degree in Education Administration.

June is survived by her devoted brother, Robert Van Wageninge of Wayne and one cousin, Marilyn “Joy” Cotton of Corona, California, as well as many second cousins.

Frederick Kroegman age 83 of Wayne died Tuesday, May 1, 2012

He was born and raised in Paterson having graduated from Passaic County Technical High School with the Class of 1946. Two weeks after his 18th birthday Fred enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Manchester and the USS WT Powell and was discharged in 1948 as a Ships Serviceman-Seaman and received the WWII Victory Medal.

He met Olive “Scottie” June Kroegman while at a party they both attended with different dates. They fell in love and married on September 12, 1952. The young couple lived together with Fred’s mother in an apartment on North Main Street in Paterson. In 1957 they moved to Wayne where they have lived for fifty years before Scottie’s passing in 2007.

Fred was an electrician with IBEW Union Local 102 of Paterson, now of Parsippany for sixty years.

He was a member for fifty-four years, and worked his way through the ranks to become Chief in 1977, of Pompton Falls Fire Company #3 in Wayne.

Fred was a Mason with the Mountain View Masonic Lodge 154 in Wayne.

He was a handyman who was always “just putzin around the house” working on any and all projects. He could fix just about anything and was a skilled woodworker as well. He enjoyed making furniture and had crafted bookcases, a television stand, and nesting jewelry boxes just to name a few items.

Betty Mae Re (nee Alt) age 86 of Clifton died Monday April 30, 2012 at Hospice of NJ in Wayne with her family by her side.

She was born in and raised in Clifton, lived there for many years as well as Totowa before moving back to Clifton 13 years ago. Betty was a Registered Nurse for over 40 years and worked for Paterson General Hospital and it’s affiliates until retiring in the late 1980’s.

She was also proud of her enlistment in the Cadet Nurses Corp. during WWII. Betty graduated from the Paterson General Nurses School and was also a member of the Paterson General Alumni Association as well as the Leisure Time Friends Senior Club.

Betty cherished 47 years of marriage to her late husband Frank Re who she assisted with his family business, Victor Dental Depot, until his passing in 1996. Her family remembers her love of card-playing as well as her love of world travel. Betty spent many years traveling all over the world and her family also remembers her being quite upset when she was forced to stop traveling due to her health.

Betty is survived by her son Thomas Re and his wife Maryann of Wayne and her daughter Bettyjo and her husband Neil of Vernon, 5 grandchildren Matthew, Rachael, Lauren, Brittany, and Chelsea, and three great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband Frank Re in 1996 and her sister Eleanor Brookes.

Mary Ellen Tooman, age 55 of Pompton Lakes, NJ, died on Sunday, April 29, 2012.

Born in Jersey City, Mary grew up in Leonia and graduated from Leonia High School with the class of 1975. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and her Master’s Degree from Penn State University.

Mary was Director, Materials Management for Total Health Rewards, and had also worked for Medsite, Total Health Products, J&J Medical Service and Prentice Hall.

Mary was very active with the Pequannock River Coalition and had won a few awards for her participation and accomplishments with regard to protecting the Highlands Watershed of New Jersey. She was also supportive of the Kennebec Land Trust in Maine. Since she was young, her family has enjoyed a cabin in Maine and this was one of her favorite places to visit. She enjoyed fishing and would take her boat out on the lake to cast her line. She was also an avid photographer and many of her photos of landscapes and nature were taken in Maine. Mary was also a self described "passable accordianist".

Mary was devoted to her family and especially so to her mother, Kathleen Tooman. Mary is survived by her beloved mom, Kathleen Tooman of Pompton Lakes, two brothers; Chris Tooman and his wife Lisa of Wayne, and John Patrick Tooman of Sag Harbor, NY, and three nephews; Conor Patrick Tooman, John Kyle Tooman, and Scott Christopher Tooman, all of Wayne.

Al Pabon age 73 a 25 year resident of Wayne died peacefully on Sunday, April 29, 2012.

He was born in Brooklyn New York and when he was 13 years old the family moved to Fair Lawn New Jersey. He lived in New Milford before moving to Wayne 25 years ago.

Al was a volunteer fireman in New Milford from 1962 – 1973.

He was a Scout Master for the Englewood Boy Scouts of America for several years.

Al graduated from Bergen Technical High School and worked for the Pallisades Motors in Engelwood. He soon found a partner and opened A&D Auto Body in Pallisades Park which he has operated for over forty years, and is still in operation today.

Doris "Dee" E. Oberg (nee Knapp) age 71 of Wayne died Friday, April 27, 2012 after a three month battle with lung cancer. She had the comfort of family

by her side.

She was born in Jersey City and lived in Palisades Park before moving to Wayne in 1946 where she graduated from the Wayne High School with the Class of 1958. During her high school years she wasa Majorette in the Marching Band. Dee always had a love for music and continued her education at the Southwestern College in Kansas where she was a music major.

After her second year in college, Dee had a little fender bender with her father's car and was referred to a nice young man named Donald Oberg to help with the repair before her father could find out. Dee had no money for the supplies and matching paint and this nice young man took money out of his own pocket to buy the paint and then do the repair. Donald thought she was beautiful and asked her out. On their first date they went to a restaurant called the Crystal Chandelier in Pompton Lakes and it was closed. Donald couldn't remember the alternate dinner location but they soon fell in love. He asked Dee's parents for her hand in marriage and they married on June 4, 1960 at the Advent Lutheran Church in Wyckoff as St Timothy Lutheran Church in Wayne was still under construction. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls New York and have enjoyed fifty-one years of loving marriage.

She worked for the Wayne Board of Education starting as a cafeteria and playground aide at A.P. Terhune School, Pines Lakes School, then in the Board office before she took a position in 1987 as the secretary for Randall Carter School having retired from there in 2010. Dee was a people person and loved working with the children and staff many of who have been dear friends now for many years.

Dee was a member and formerly the organist for St Timothy Lutheran Church in Wayne. She was also a member of the Golden Age Circle of Wayne.

She will be remembered mostly for her fun loving generous giving personality. Whether it was a holiday, or someone's birthday, or someone just need to be cheered up, Dee was always thinking of them with a card or a phone call or gift. She loved shopping, going for coffee or lunch with friends, Sunday brunch, listening to music, going to the movies, Broadway shows, trips to Atlantic City and LasVegas, vacations with family and friends and spending many summers at the beach in Wildwood Crest. She was true to her family and friends and they were true to her.

She had a heart of gold and was loved by all.

She was the loving wife of Donald Oberg; devoted mother of Carin Della Badia of Scotch Plains, and Donald Oberg and his wife Lynn of East Windsor; cherished grandmother of Tyler and Paige Della Badia, and Amanda and Kristin Oberg.

Arthur H. Dardia, Sr. age 93 of Wayne died Friday, April 27, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Wayne.

He was born in Clifton and raised in Paterson having graduated from Eastside High School with the Class of 1937. He has lived in Wayne for the past 62 years.

Arthur met his future wife Edythe Wylie through family acquaintances and took her ice skating on their first date. Edythe fell on the ice and got soaking wet. They went to Arthur’s aunt’s home where Edythe was given a robe and her clothes were all laid on radiators to dry. After taking her home, he told his mom “that’s the girl I’m gonna marry” which got a big laugh from his mom. They married four years later on September 21, 1940 at the Totowa Memorial Church in Paterson. After the wedding they boarded a bus to New York City with $80.00 in their pockets. They stayed at the New Yorker Hotel, saw the movie Gone With The Wind, and attended the World’s Fair. In 1990 the family re-created their wedding day, down to their wedding colors of Alice Blue and Peach, at the Brownstone House in Paterson.

In 1942, two years after he was married, a surge of patriotism flowed through Arthur after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the Army Air Corps. He was known as “Pappy” as he was considered “the old guy” at the age of 24. Arthur would speak of being stationed in San Antonio Texas where there wasn’t a single traffic light and learning to fly in a plywood airplane at Goodfellow Air Base in Texas. He was honorably discharged in 1944.

Before and after going into the military, Arthur worked as a butcher at the A&P Supermarket on Union Boulevard in the Totowa section of Paterson. Upon his return from the military, one of his old customers, Charlie Neil, came into the A&P and asked him to run one of his seven one man hardware stores at 449 East 18th Street in Paterson. He took off his butcher’s apron and has been a hardware man ever since. In 1945 Arthur started to purchase the store, and in 1977 completed the purchase. In 1972, his son Arthur Jr. joined him at the store, and in 1977 his son-in-law Leo came into the family business. After 68 years, the store is still owned by the family, and in operation today. Arthur continued to visit the store nearly every day and was on his way “to work” on the day of his death.

Arthur was an innovator in the hardware industry having belonged to the first hardware buying co-op in NJ known as Coin Hardware, where he served as President in the mid 1950’s representing 125 stores. Eventually Coin joined the American Hardware co-op in Pennsylvania growing to 500 stores. This group eventually merged into ServiStar Hardware and is now known as True Value. A local first in the 1940’s Arthur designed and built a storefront show window with Lionel trains. He had mountains, hills, valleys, crossings and an entire display attracting many to his store just to see the trains.

He enjoyed over fifty years of vacationing at The Poplars in Newboro, Ontario, Canada and was a “snow bird” for over twenty years spending winters in Tamarac, Florida.

Arthur was a member of the First Reformed Church in Pompton Plains where he served on the Evangelization Team, attended Bible Group, and served on the Consistory.

He was a member of the Paterson Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellow – the highest award a Rotarian can receive.

Arthur was a member of the Packanack Golf Club, was an avid fisherman and belonged to the Fair Lawn Rod & Gun Club.

He was the loving husband of the late Edythe (Wylie) Dardia (2004); devoted father of Judith Bristol and her husband Bruce of Landing, Arthur H. Dardia, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Wayne, and Leslie Mozulay and her husband Leo of Wayne; cherished grandfather of Bruce Bristol, Jr. and his wife Jennifer, Daari Daniels and her husband Jayson, Arthur Dardia III and his wife Julia, Kristen Dardia and her fiancé Christopher Turner, Jana Cohen and her husband Arik, Evona Mozulay and her fiancé Daniel Panycia; loving great-grandfather of Jayson Wynn Daniels, Jr. and Arthur Henry Dardia IV; brother of the late Eleanor Dardia, Helen Anzevino of South Hackensack, and Jane Tout of Cape Cod, MA.

Brian J. Cooke, age 54 of Wayne, died on Tuesday, April 24, 2012.

Brian was co-owner and operator of N.J. Valley Amusements and had worked with the company since he was a young boy. He would throw a fit if his father went to work without him and by the time he was five or six years old, he knew his way around New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut to all the carnival locations. He used to love riding in the truck with his dad, and they grew very close over the years; they were best friends. As Brian got older, he became an outstanding truck driver and he could maneuver the carnival rides into narrow alleys and New York City streets like nobody else. Having worked ever since he was a kid, Brian developed a very strong work ethic. There was always something to be fixed or assembled. Brian was the best at figuring things out. Most of the time, he didn’t even need a manual – he could just look at the parts and figure out how it was supposed to go together. He was a fantastic welder, mechanic, electrician, and really knew his stuff. Everybody else would call Brian if they had a problem, because he always knew how to fix it, or he could sure figure it out.

Brian was also an excellent cook. He loved to make holiday dinners and Thanksgiving was his favorite. He made the best eggplant rollatini and one of his specialties was chocolate pudding. He never used anything but My*T*Fine pudding mix because that’s what his mom always used.

Brian met his wife Judi (nee Pine) when she was just fourteen years old. She had a crush on him and decided to write an article about him for a school project. Their paths took different directions however, and it wasn’t until many years later that they got together and then married in 1994. They have enjoyed eighteen years of marriage together.

Brian is survived by his wife Judi of Wayne, his daughter Jennifer Jones of Piscataway, NJ, and his son Brian Dela Barrera of Wayne, and the late William Cooke, his granddaughter Destiny, his mother; Edith Cooke and the late William R. Cooke of Wayne, his brothers and sisters: William Cooke of Toms River, the late Robert Cooke and his wife Donna of Wayne, Honeybun Cooke-Miller and the late Sam of Wayne, Gary Cooke of Wayne, the late Linda Cooke of Wayne, Nancy Spetz and her husband Charles of Oak Ridge, Marilyn Gabriel and the late Albert of Wayne, John Cooke of Wayne, Jennifer Cooke and her fiancé Jeff Militello of Wayne, nieces and nephews; Vanessa, Terrance, Juliette, Donna, Gabe, Aimee, Sean, Katie, Meghan, Natalie, Albert, Baby Natalie, Nicholas, Edie, Linda, Nancy, Heidi, Charlie, Sara, John, Steven, Gwendolyn, Kim, Alexa, and Lily, and loved very much his sisters two puppies; Diesel and Duallyette, as well as many aunts, uncles, and dear friends.

A Happy Ending

When the show on earth is over and the Master says "time to go, the angels here in heaven are waiting for your show," we must go on as He beckons, we must quickly slough and fly, for He knows our show is needed for His children in the sky.

Yes, there'll be carnivals in heaven, with bright lights and fun galore, and the organ will sound sweeter than you've ever heard before. There'll be Eli wheels and scramblers, merry go rounds for wee ones too. God, Himself, the supervisor, and we Carny folks the crew.

The angels on the "Jinny" ride playing music pure and sweet for the cherubs on the horses galloping round on wooden feet. There'll be popcorn and cotton candy, with just a deeper pink, perhaps a little sweeter since it's made in heaven, don't you think?

The "jump" from earth to heaven will be the grandest one of all, without a single breakdown, with no truck motor to stall. So let's make the show a good one, while here on earth we dwell, so when we set it up in heaven, God will say: "A job done well."

Arthur B. Termott, age 97 of Wayne, died on Tuesday, April 24, 2012.

Arthur was born Biagio Arturo Termotto in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and spent most of his childhood in Brooklyn, graduating from New Utrecht High School in 1933.

Arthur began working for Ford Motor Company in Edgewater, New Jersey and was eventually transferred to their new plant in Teterboro, where he worked his way up to head of security and served as deputy fire chief.

After 41 years with Ford, he retired in 1977.

Art met his wife Catherine (nee Moore) while working at Ford, when Catherine’s brother--and one of Art’s co-workers--set them up. They were married in New York City in 1940 and enjoyed 50 years of marriage before her passing in 1990.

Arthur moved with his wife, Catherine, and daughter, Catherine Ann, to Wayne in 1958, where he lived next-door to his in-laws, Bob and Marie Whalen and their five children. Nothing pleased Arthur more than spending time with his family; he was especially proud and loving of his grandchildren and did everything he could with them, attending every sporting event and sharing every milestone. Nicknamed “Red” for his distinctive hair color, Arthur will be remembered as a humble and kind man who appreciated life’s simple pleasures, from the southern Italian food of his heritage to rooting for the New York Yankees to mixing a legendary whiskey sour.

Art is survived by his daughter Catherine A. Squires and her husband, John, of Wayne; three grandchildren: John Arthur Squires and his wife, Mary Lou, of Franklin Lakes; Kathleen Squires and her husband, Hernan Rodriguez, of Manhattan; and Christine Squires and her husband, Steven Pashkoff, of Brooklyn. He is also survived by his three

great-grandchildren: William Arthur, Elizabeth Marie, and Emma Felicia; and his many beloved nieces and nephews. Art is the last of his family generation and was recently predeceased by his sister, Jean Benanti, of Staten Island, and previously, four brothers: Tony, Joe, Angelo, and John.

Julia (Judy) Pavlischak, a devoted wife and mother, age 87, passed into eternal life on April 23, 2012.

The youngest of 8 children, she was born in Wilkes Barre, PA., where her parents had immigrated to from the Ukraine. She had one sister, Anne Yaskowiak, and brothers John, Peter, Michael, & Louis Steblinski who predeceased her. She is survived by brother, Emil Steblinski and his wife Helen of Ohio.

Judy was a lively and spirited young girl who was always protected by her big brothers. She eventually fell head-over-heels in love with her brothers' friend, Joseph Pavlischak. 7 years her senior, Joe went into the army to serve during World War II. Shortly after his return home, they were married on February 16, 1946 and lived in both Miners Mills and Gravel Hill within Wilkes Barre for several years. In search of employment, Joe commuted to New Jersey and would stay at his family's home in Bloomfield returning to Judy on the weekends. In 1952, they moved to New Jersey with their daughter Sonja and Judy's mother. They settled in Paterson and had another daughter, Margaret several years later.

While raising her children, Judy initially worked at the Continental Can Company and then for many years as a waitress at the Tree Tavern Restaurant in Paterson with her friend Rose Madden. Although the hours were long and hard, she always found time for her family and friends. Her reputation as a wonderful cook led to helping the priests at Don Bosco in Paterson by preparing meals for them over many years. She was famous for her Pot Roast and traditional foods as well.

A parishioner at St. Mary's Church in Paterson who attended Mass daily, Judy was never without her prayer book and began each morning with her coffee and book. Held together with an elastic band, the book contained every funeral prayer card she had ever received. She prayed for each and every one of them as well as her children and grandchildren every day of her life.

Upon retiring, Judy & Joe helped with the grandchildren, sharing many precious moments and milestones throughout the years. They eventually moved to Wayne's Sienna Village in 1995 and lived there for many years. In 1996, a beautiful 50th Anniversary Party was thrown in their honor at the Regency House. It was a wonderful occasion and they were joined by all their friends and family.

Judy was always busy being a homemaker and cooking for Joe, the love of her life. She took care of him until he passed away in June of 2004. They were married for 58 years.

Although heartbroken from the loss of her beloved Joe, she never lost her ability to support and care for others. A wonderful example of living a life of peace and love, Judy was kind, generous and always there for anyone who needed her. Even though deeply saddened by her loss, she never had a selfish thought, continuing to love her family above all and give of herself unconditionally. She never accused, belittled or insulted anyone... ever. Even after being diagnosed with dementia, she accepted her fate with dignity. Although confused, she was quiet, patient and peaceful. Her hospice aide described her as "beautiful inside and out". There was never an unkind word, self pity or aggression.

Surviving to mourn the many wonderful memories are her two daughters, Sonja Horvath (husband Richard) of Wayne, and Maggie Morone of Paterson. Loving Grandchildren, Christian (wife Michelle Charfen,) Jeanice Edge (husband Ryan,) and Cheryl Lynn Serpiello (husband Robert.) Cherished Great Grandchildren Connor, Riley, and Brady Edge; as well as Kylie, Kendall, and Reese Charfen-Horvath. Her brother Emil Steblinski (wife Helen) and so many loving nieces and nephews especially Charlotte (Cookie) Cikowski and Robert Powell.

Gladys I. McGuire age 87 of Wayne passed away on Monday April 23, 2012 at Hospice of NJ in St Joseph’s Wayne Hospital with her loving family by her side.

Gladys was born in Brooklyn ,NY and lived in South Orange, NJ before moving to Wayne over 50 years ago. She was a Records Clerk for the Wayne police Dept for over 25 years until her retirement 25 years ago. Gladys was also a parishioner of Our lady of the Valley RC church in Wayne.

She cherished 54 years of marriage with her late husband Thomas McGuire who passed away in August of 2000. She was a dedicated wife and mother and always made time for her family which was the most important thing in her life. Her family remembers her “cooking constantly for everyone all the time”.

Gladys is survived by her daughter Erin Hobaugh of Pompton lakes and her husband Bruce, two granddaughters Colleen and Courtney Hobaugh both of Pompton Lakes, and five cousins Charles Conry, Kenny Conry, mary Malhin, Kathleen Walsh, and Patty Boyle.

Eugene F. Pawlowski age 80 of Wayne died Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

He graduated from Pope Pius High School in Passaic with the Class of 1949 having continued his education at St. Johns University where he graduated from the College of Pharmacy with the Class of 1953. After graduating from St. John’s he got a job at the Steigner Pharmacy in Paterson. He worked at the pharmacy and eventually took over the business having a lifelong career at the pharmacy until his retirement in 2000.

Gene was a parishioner of Our Lady of Consolation RC Church in Wayne.

Gene met Sophie Molczyk through friends in the neighborhood. The neighborhood friends often traveled together going to places such as Roosevelt Raceway in Long Island, day trips to the NJ Shore, trips to Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and the theatre in Montclair. They soon fell in love and married on July 8, 1972 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Garfield. They have enjoyed forty years of a loving, devoted, and faith filled marriage before Sophie’s passing on March 17, 2012.

He enjoyed traveling and has taken many cruises including Alaska, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. He liked to visit Atlantic City and played golf for many years.

He was the loving husband of the late Sophie (Lasko) Pawlowski (March 17, 2012); John Molczyk and his wife Loret of Wayne, Victor Molczyk and his wife Karin of Ellicott City, MD, and Christine Mascia and her husband Paul of Eldersburg, MD; dear grandfather of David, Daniel, Stephen, Brian, and Kevin Molczyk, and Thomas, Jacob, and Victoria Mascia; brother of the late Sophie Lomski, Gladys Nieradka, and Albin Pawlowski.

Antoinette Tormino, age 85 of Wayne and formerly of Queens, New York, died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 22, 2012 surrounded by her daughters and loving family.

Antoinette was born in the Bronx, New York to Vincent and Nicasia Faso in 1927. She was the youngest of eight children and the only girl. Although of modest means, the family was happy and close knit. After graduating from Walton High School, she began working in Manhattan and enjoyed her youth spending time with friends. Then, introduced by a mutual friend, she met and fell in love with John Tormino. They were married in 1960 and moved to Queens to raise their family. They were very happy together and devoted to one another. Sadly, John passed away suddenly in 1973, after just thirteen years of marriage. Thereafter, Antoinette did everything for her girls, working hard to provide them a loving, stable and supportive home. It brought Antoinette such joy to take her daughters on a family trip to Disney World - not an easy task for a widow with two children living on a secretary’s wage. She proudly worked at Marsh & McClennan Insurance in New York City after John passed away, and retired after twelve years of service.

Antoinette moved to Florida in 1995 and enjoyed a wonderful retirement in Boynton Beach. Soon after moving there, she was introduced to Anthony Barbera and the two were happy companions for many years. Antoinette moved back north to Wayne, New Jersey in 2007 to live with her daughter Claudia and to be closer to her family.

Throughout the years, Antoinette loved reading, music, history and especially enjoyed dancing. She was also a wonderful cook. Traditional Italian dishes were her specialty, and her lasagna was second to none. She always hosted the family dinners at her house and she loved having everyone together.

Antoinette is survived by her devoted family: daughter Claudia Tormino and her husband Mitchell Edelson of Wayne; daughter Lisa Tormino and her husband George Rothman of New York City and her beloved grandsons; Craig and Kevin Edelson of Wayne.

Doris M. Van Decker, “Aunt Dot” to just about everyone, who was 101 years old, died at her nephew’s home in North Haledon on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Her family was gathered at her bedside.

Doris was born in Welland, Ontario in 1910. Her father was a member of a vaudeville act and played banjo, among other instruments. His career eventually brought him closer to New York City during the “roaring 20’s”. He settled his family in the Delawanna section of Clifton, New Jersey in 1922. Doris was the oldest daughter among the twelve children in her family and she used to tell the story of how her father had to custom build a kitchen table that would fit them all – no store carried a table large enough.

From her earliest years, she was helping to raise her siblings and those experiences certainly contributed to her kind and nurturing disposition which she carried throughout her lifetime. Family was her foundation and she was instrumental in raising her nieces, nephews and some of their children too. She was married to her husband Leonard until his death in Dec. of 1973. She relocated to Summerville, South Carolina and settled there for 30 years or so. While living in Summerville she was blessed with a number of new caring friends (Elaine, Liz & Chris, Annie & Gene, Cindy, Lynette, Patty & Lou, Gladys, Mary (and the Oak Brook Towers family), who all enjoyed her wonderful sense of humor. She always spoke kindly of Pastor Paul and her loving spiritual family at Crosstowne Church.

She and her friend, Walter, were big baseball fans and used to drive to Atlanta to take in a Brave’s game whenever possible. She loved to dance and was an avid fisherman. She enjoyed casting into the local lakes and seeing what she might catch. Despite her age and all the wonderful years she was blessed with, she never learned to drive a car. In fact, she was quite content having others chauffeuring her around wherever it was that she needed to go.

Doris is survived by two sisters; Helen Lass of North Carolina, Joan Futter of Hackettstown, New Jersey, two brothers; Raymond Burgess of Blairstown, New Jersey, and Gilbert Burgess of Nutley, New Jersey, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews who all love her dearly. Preceding her in death was Lloyd, Albert, Leonard, Mildred, Ruth, Madeline, and Russell.
